What the heck?

Got a bill in the mail today. Not to suggest that bills are an unusual thing, but this one was a bit of a surprise. It's from the company that carried my long distance service, which was discontinued at the same time I cancelled my land line several months ago. That final bill was paid way back then, so I figured I was done with it.

Hmmm. So, I opened the envelope to find a bill for July's service, and the usual envelope in which to send the remittance. The amount of the bill = 14 cents. It's written in three places, just like their regular bills. 14 cents. Am I going to write check for that amount, and then spend four times that amount on a stamp? Hardly. Pay it electronically? No.

Being a crotchety old bat sometimes I found myself somewhat miffed at this annoyance, and determined not to pay the silly thing, I made a splotch on it with a yellow highlighter, on which I penned "Seriously?" Then I circled the dates of "service" and reminded them of the previous termination of service. Tucking the thing inside the helpfully provided pre-addressed envelope, I put that same address in the spot for return address, sealed the envelope and dropped it in the mailbox sans stamp. I figure they'll have to pay the postage to open an envelope with no money inside.

Maybe they'll send another bill, maybe I'll handle it the same way. If nothing else, it could help keep the post office afloat, yeah?

It turned out that Sprint did not supply service to a small area of North Florida (where my horse trainer lived). If I had not previously had AT&T Sprint would have contracted with them and done the billing. But since I had a previous relationship, AT&T billed me directly. I think it was about $0.36.

I had the same reaction as you - "Seriously?" But I had time, so I called AT&T and asked them about it. The customer service lady sounded embarrassed and said they were not supposed to bill for less than $1 so she waived the amount.

If you want to torture them, send a check for MORE than they billed you. When you get an invoice with a credit, insist that they cut you a refund check.

My sister used to do that to the telephone company that supplied service in the Tampa area. They had upset her by constantly getting their billing messed up, over-billing, charging her late fees when she had already paid, and other incompetencies. One year she managed to collect six checks from them for amounts ranging from a quarter to less than five dollars. NEVER piss off my sister - she will get her revenge!

I received a "reimbursement check" from my bank for 18 cents, with the warning, "VOID AFTER 90 DAYS"

I think I'll play it dangerously and hang onto it.

I thought of just framing it, but I didn't want to be responsible for causing our nation to have an accounting crisis over that 2 cents remaining on the books, year after year...

5. i just this week got a notice from a collection company...........

it stated that I owed $170 to my former car insurance company, Nationwide. I had Nationwide since 1998 and changed to State Farm in May of this year when my Nationwide policy was over & they had given me notice they would not renew, because.....I use my car for Uber & Lyft. I had no claims in the 17 years I was with Nationwide.

I hate the fact that I didn't get notice from Nationwide about this & they sent it directly to a collections company. I called the company who tried to tell me that in some way that even though you pay, it's for the current month not for future months. I said if I paid 6 months for a 6 month policy then I'm paid. He said prove it.

That will be easy enough, they will get a fax containing every email that confirmed my payment online. I have them all dating back to 2009.
