and the dog is just totally NOT responding to the commands that he and his owner obviously learned at some obedience class

the dog is having a blast chasing those deer and is completely ignoring the person

we have taken to calling my kid's dog Fenton (real name - Ranger)

Fenton's doing his thing. He don't care.

If only the deer had turned as one and chased Fenton, with Fenton taking the lead and his owner running behind him, still yelling, Fen-ton! Fen-ton!
