(46,756 posts)that they will probably head for the desert. I think that finding the school's food supply would have planted an idea in the mom's head. She might look for something like that to shore up on supplies.
I think this one will be different because it was hinted that there would be an attempt to take back the city.
In other words, this might be closer to World War Z in the end.

(56,828 posts)However, when they showed the cop hording jugs of water in the back of his squad car, it makes you think they (the cops/authorities) know things are going badly behind the scenes and away from the media.
It makes me think that the apocalypse had already started when Rick was shot and went into his coma - the isolated outbreaks and weird youtube videos just were not something a family man like Rick would have been following all that closely. The news would have been reporting flu outbreaks and maybe some new drug that is driving people crazy. Plus, Rick being in a suburban/rural area, he might not be following the news out of the big cities that closely, being more focused on his own jurisdiction.
Baclava
(12,047 posts)Bu we know if you die infected, you turn - it seems to happen so quickly here.
Some are more resistant to the contagion than others and that's who we're seeing survive the initial outbreak?

(12,047 posts)All's we see are people getting sick, and turning when they die - so the guess is everyone is infected
lunatica
(53,410 posts)The doctor in the Center for Disease Control told Rick that everyone is infected and that they turn when they die, no matter what the cause is. Rick kept it to himself for a very long time. I think it he finally told people at the end of the second season when Shane turned and Carl killed him.
Baclava
(12,047 posts)They've never explained how that works
lunatica
(53,410 posts)They saved Hershel's life by amputating his bitten leg, but weren't able to save Tyreese who ended up bleeding out.
I think the whole thing could have started with people being infected without knowing it. It was probably a virus or 'new' flu, maybe the old man who was sharing Nick's hospital room had the virus. He wasn't bitten. Then when people infected with the virus die, they turn and go bite or eat the living. Getting infected and being able to travel in airplanes would cause the infection to spread very, very fast.
Anyway, that's my theory because the spread wouldn't be public knowledge for a long time. It would also explain how the Zombification got its start. The first ones died first of a disease, then they turned and bit others.
NewJeffCT
(56,828 posts)maybe the zombies have a toxin in their bite that kills you faster?
I liked how the book "Plague of the Dead" handled it. You get bitten and the fever causes a kind of insane rage. They become fast moving zombies that attack anything on site, sort of like 28 Days Later zombies. They can be killed as normal - shot to the heart or stomach, etc. However, after they die this time, they come back as the slow moving shamblers that need a headshot to kill.
Baclava
(12,047 posts)and we've only got 4 episodes left - we can't be killing them all twice!

I'm old. I already know life can be a river of shit. I don't mind dark, intense stories but these series are just all agony all the time and frankly, I'm ready to nuke the site from orbit. It's the only way to be sure.

They've had not only police with riot gear trying to stop the zombies, but they also have a military response - national guard, maybe, but maybe they suspend posse commitus because the situation is so dire and they send in the marines/army? hard to tell from a preview. They also had one preview where it shows blocks of LA in flames - possibly from the napalm mentioned in the parent show?

(53,410 posts)It always confuses me when people think that necessary information for the development of a story isn't important. It may appear slow but the producers said it was full of seemingly unimportant plot seeds that would make sense later. And how else are we going to get the story about how it all starts?
I looked for them, and so far the only one I think I found was the marker drawing that Elisa got from her boyfriend on her arm. I'm wondering if after they leave him that he doesn't survive somehow and she finds his drawing on walls somewhere. We've assumed he dies because we've seen such few survivors but we haven't seen him die. We thought Meryl was dead for two or more seasons.
Maybe the book that Maddy picks up in the church that has Nick's drug paraphenalia in it shows up later.
I think the show is developing well. Of course I want more, but for now I'm paying attention.
Baitball Blogger
(46,756 posts)One of the biggest problems that we saw develop on WD, is that human dynamics make a huge difference. Those who still wanted to retain their humanity and a sense of civilization were the first to fall.
Though, I seem to recollect that there was a gang in Atlanta that managed to protect the old and infirmed. I wonder if we're heading in that direction?
lunatica
(53,410 posts)shows some sort of attempt to protect a nascent new community. We're assuming it was just looting, but the policeman didn't take food because there was a definite clear shot of the contents of his trunk. Maybe that's another one of the plot seed planted in the story. Whenever the characters see something and the camera shows it that may not be just some screen filler just to make the show extend for the full hour. Travis and the policeman had a definite moment. I think we'll see something regarding another group of people coming out of that scene.
The characters are going to have to deal with basic survival in a city setting for quite a while now. I don't think they'll be able to leave L.A. right away because that's what they did on the Walking Dead. This is a good way to explore what it would be like if people can't leave the city. Food and water are the primary things they need right away. Maybe we saw the family getting separated for quite a while before they can find each other or maybe it was just a way of getting the new characters in the story. Did Travis and Maddie agree where they were planning to go?
They're going to have to find weapons, hopefully guns so they can shoot the zombies from a distance. At least at first because they don't already know that noise attracts the zombies. They actually know almost nothing about the zombies. The trailers are showing the National Guard, so that's another story to see happen. Maddy is alone with her children, one of who is in pretty bad shape, and she doesn't have any weapons, although she's already learned how to kill the zombies. Maddy has problems with both kids. Her daughter is determined to get to her boyfriend. But Maddy is also in the suburbs which don't seem to be as overrun with zombies as the city is. Not yet anyway.
NewJeffCT
(56,828 posts)I think Travis and Madison just said "out to the desert," but I don't recall a specific location. Maybe it's Cousin Bob's place out in the desert they both know about, but we as viewers do not? Or, maybe they hadn't gotten that far?
I think the daughter is going to slip out and try to find her boyfriend and maybe get bitten by him? Or, maybe her mom finds out in time and manages to save her?
If the city doesn't get napalmed, it might be an okay place to ride out the apocalypse - stay in a high rise and secure the stairwells, and you have an advantage against both zombies and looters/gangs. Put some makeshift cisterns on the roof for water (not that there is a lot of rain in LA...)

(90,779 posts)Helicopters, planes. Snicker.
The juxtaposition of the bouncy house/children's party/birthdays, or normalcy, with the actions of the other neighbors. One packing the car & Maddy and Travis gearing up for things to come. At the same time, calling in prescriptions. Reality at a crawl.
Withdrawal during the zombie apocalypse. Apt. People will be having withdrawals from the old normal. The haze of perception - what's real, what isn't. Fever state between waking and dreaming.
More hints of Maddy's past.
Tobias! He came back to school to get his knife? Looking for numbers? Looking for Maddy? Because there were no more knives?
Whatever. Glad he's there.
Police - protect and serve highlighted...(looting?) water, shooting people...in a time of real life police shooting people....so reactions would be the same to police brutality. (outrage, protests) - but things aren't the same now.
Alicia being an idiot. Coming back. (Whew)
Maddy has seen one of "them" but won't tell Tobias. In protection mode? (protect the young from bad news - don't alarm them kind of thing) Doesn't want to believe it herself?
Tobias explaining the "fire sale" of the apocalypse. Maddy still trusting in authority.
Ha! Called it last week. Artie is a zombie. Not that it was a hard call to make. Seemed obvious.
Maddy's reaction time lacks a lot to be desired.
Maddy saw what happened with the drug dealer and still is in disbelief. Let me help the dead man walking. Oh, Artie, let me make it all better.
Finally!
Yay! Tobias!
Ever play the WD video games.? The "riding it out" in the barber shop reminds me of it. (as an aside)
Tobias, go with Maddy!
Everything & everyone looks scarier. The sense of caution increasing.
Maddy's home.
Nick narcs on his sister while he is grinding up his Oxycontin. lol

Maddy keeping Alicia inside.

(12,047 posts)They had the right idea to get the food then just left it there after the one guy attacked them. why??? There was nothing stopping you from taking the fucking food you went out of your way to get and you just left it? Left a months supply of food? For no good reason? You had a car! But, in an empty school, it does seem kind of crazy to not have taken the food. The monitoring system was still working, so they would have had the "heads up" if something or someone else was coming. It's still way too early for big gangs of looters to have formed.
