The DU Lounge
Related: Culture Forums, Support ForumsMy favorite Beatles song is
"What Goes On"' from Rubber Soul. Not sure why. Maybe it is because I remember the album cover from when I was a kid. Maybe it is the rockabilly feel about it. Maybe it is the first time I heard the guitar come out and be the lead instrument. Not sure, but here it is. Post your favorite Beatles song

(6,261 posts)I made a CD of songs to pick me up out of the doldrums, and that one is on it. I always feel better afterwards.
Also, Good Day, Sunshine, It's a beautiful Morning (Rascals), and Twist & Shout. I think I'll play it right now; it's been a few years.

(28,394 posts)Beautiful and moving. Bette Midler sings it in "For the Boys," as a singer performing for soldiers in Vietnam and it is just ...beyond. One of the many reasons I love her.

(24,301 posts)I think of it as more of a George Harrison solo song, but he was my favorite Beatle. I was so sad the day he died and when I listened to this song all the grief just left me. It has a healing power.
It will be played at my funeral and everyone will be given a copy of the lyrics to take home.

(82,849 posts)But think about the lyrics to "Help" and "Yesterday," and realize that they were written by guys in their twenties. Those are two songs by old men, or at least old souls.

(17,202 posts)You ever notice that most Beatle lovers always cite their later work, and may even be disdainful of their early, straight-ahead rock and roll period? Me, I think "Please Please Me" is one of the best two minutes ever recorded. Tight, great beat, and incredible energy. I can't think of many pop groups that come close to them in every respect.

(34,111 posts)is my favorite. A couple not mentioned that I always listen to when I can,
"Within You Without You"
Also "Fixing A Hole"
And last but not least "Being for the Benefit of Mr. Kite"
Sgt. Pepper is not my favorite album by any means but those 3 songs from it are pretty cool.

(33,688 posts)but this bit of pungent Lennon wordplay, spooky Macca bass parr, Ringo at his minamalist best, and general off-the-wallness has always held a favorite place in the utter timeless greatness that is the Beatles catalogue:

(23,340 posts)your favorite song is not on the North American release of album, nor is "Drive My Car", another of my favorite Beatle songs. It is only on the English release.
The American edition differed markedly from its British counterpart. Four tracks were removed and set aside for the next American album, Yesterday and Today: "Drive My Car", "Nowhere Man", "What Goes On" and "If I Needed Someone". These were replaced with two tracks from the UK Help! album: "I've Just Seen a Face" and "It's Only Love". The total time was 28:55, nearly 7 minutes shorter than the British version. Through peculiarities of sequencing, by placing the Help! tracks at the beginning of each side, Rubber Soul was deliberately reconfigured to appear a "folk rock" album to angle the Beatles into that emergent lucrative American genre during 1965.[49]
