Lorenzo Pietro "Yogi" Berra died last night after a long illness.
He was 90.
Probably the most unique character in baseball history, Yogi was truly "one of a kind."
His quotes are often called "Yogi-isms"
One time, on a road trip, Yogi said of the hotel the Yankees stayed at:
"The towels were so thick there I could hardly close my suitcase."

RIP. A Great One has passed. We must keep his unique form of wisdom in our hearts.

(62,423 posts)Yogi did a pre-game interview with his old buddy (and close friend from their childhood on The Hill in St. Louis) Joe Garagiola. For that Yogi was to get some money. When Gargiola gave Yogi the check it was made out "Pay to The Order of __________ with the blank filled in with "Bearer." Yogi looked at Joe and said "geez Joe, after all these years can't you spell my name?"
My favorite quote - when the Yankees put Yogi in left field to save his legs and get Ellie Howard's bat in the line up, Yogi observed that shadows arrived early in left with this "It gets late early out here."

(82,849 posts)Every baseball fan, particularly Pirates fans, remembers the 1960 World Series, in which Pittsburgh beat the Yankees four games to three on Bill Mazeroski's home run in the bottom of the ninth inning of Game 7. The last man to see that ball leave the yard was Yogi Berra, playing left field:
