Tobin's Weekly Weigh-In Thread

I'm heavier now than I have ever been in my life. On 9/21/15 I weighed in at 356.4.

I am going to lose this weight. I'd like to get down to about 220. I am going to weigh in every Friday and post the results here. I'm using this thread as a motivational tool.

I'm not going to be on any particular diet. I'm just going to watch my caloric intake and exercise.

Thu Sep 24, 2015, 01:41 AM
Sep 2015

I won't be able to run until I drop a bunch of weight, but it's a good goal to keep in mind. I used to run 2 miles a day when I was a teenager. I'd like to be able to do that again.

I have a course laid out around my neighborhood that's about 1 mile. A few days ago, it was all I could do to walk that mile. I really had to push myself. I just got in from a midnight stroll because I couldn't sleep and it's already getting easier.

I will add distance as I progress.

64. You might try Nordic Walking.
Fri Oct 16, 2015, 07:44 PM
Oct 2015

Compared to regular walking, Nordic walking (also called pole walking) involves applying force to the poles with each stride. Nordic walkers use more of their entire body (with greater intensity) and receive fitness building stimulation not present in normal walking for the chest, latissimus dorsi muscle, triceps, biceps, shoulder, abdominals, spinal and other core muscles that may result in significant increases in heart rate at a given pace.[4]

Nordic walking has been estimated as producing up to a 46% increase in energy consumption, compared to walking without poles.[5][6]
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nordic_walking

I made poles out of 1/4" pvc pipe, crutch/chair tips (at Lowes) and bicycle hand grips from Walmart. Cheap.

Hold your forearms at parallel to the ground. That's how long the poles should be.
Also gives you an great amount of stability if you're a geezer like me.
Burns more calories and helps to tone upper body.

4. Try to avoid processed foods if you can - they often seem to trigger hunger
Wed Sep 23, 2015, 09:21 PM
Sep 2015

Like prepackaged dinners, microwavable stuff, etc. If they're full of preservatives and sodium you may still have the same cravings for fattier, starchier foods and that will always trip you up. It's like diet Coke makes you eat more - there's some twisted chemistry in processed foods that makes your body want more, and leaves you feeling unsatisfied after meals because you've eaten mostly junk food masquerading as a "good for you" Lean Cuisine.

I've been helping a family member lose weight and we only eat "whole" foods - vegetables and fruit, mostly. He'll have grilled chicken sometimes if we go out. Very very little bread. No cheese, but sometimes a little feta. Chick peas for bulk, and sometimes some walnuts. I make the salad dressing at home (olive oil, balsamic vinegar, oregano, Dijon mustard, garlic and some pepper). It was easy to eat this way in the summer when fresh vegetables were plentiful, but now we'll shift more to root veggies - squashes and roasted vegetables like cauliflower, beets, broccoli, etc.

The thing that made it easy, too, was a giant vegetable chopper. I'll toss all kinds of veggies into the chopper, and pour a little salad dressing on it, add some chickpeas and walnuts and call it a meal. The great thing is, you can eat a LOT of vegetables, have very little caloric intake, feel full, and be doing great things for your body.

It takes a week or two for your tastebuds to adjust but once they do - you will realize just how awful processed food is. If we go out we get a salad, and if it has to be quick, we'll go to Subway because they'll make a very good sized salad for you and we share it.

Anyway. Just sharing my experience. Low cal crap is still crap. The only way to be really healthy long term is to eat more veggies, reduce dairy and bread.

Good luck to you!

My blood sugar is normal and so is my blood pressure. I have blood work done every six months and the doctor hasn't said anything about my cholesterol. Thyroid function is normal.

I think I do have a bit of arthritis in my lower back. Hopefully that will improve as I take pressure off my joints through the weight loss.

The thing about being heavy, though, is that it will catch up to you at some point. I'm going to try to avoid that.

13. My advice - do NOT diet
Wed Sep 23, 2015, 10:34 PM
Sep 2015

diets are meant to fail

Instead learn to live healthy. It is not easy and some days suck but when you have a bad day tomorrow is a new day to start again.

Do something everyday to be healthy. Read the labels of what you are about to eat then make choices based on those labels. Get up every morning and walk. If you don't have a Fitbit or jawbone just get a $10 pedometer and track your daily steps. When I was 310lbs I was trying for 3000-4000 a day. Today I am 115lbs lighter I do way more.

Be healthy every day. Learn to make it a way of life and the weight will come off.

Oh and get blood work and checkup from your doctor to make sure nothing is slowing your down too.

I was in your shoes and didn't think I could do it. If I can you can. Ping me if you need a friend to help you through!!!!!

the other half of Qsymia is Topiamate (sp?) which could be prescribed to help with food cravings. Also one of the other new weight loss prescription drugs is Belivq but never used it. It's a shame about Qsymia, it has worked but cannot jeopardize your job.

Main thing is to get you off the junk food which can be hard. It's an addiction which means cutting could turkey is hard too. But recognizing what got you to your weight is a big step forward with helping to change to a better lifestyle that helps you get the weight off.

Get blood work and make sure they test for thyroid and Vitamin D. If these numbers are bad you won't lose any weight. That's what I found out about myself.

Sep 2015

He went from 351 to 315 in six months. And he can't exercise much due to his pain.

What we did was:
More home cooking and portion control. Pretty much the only starches are oatmeal, grits, or farina and fruit for breakfast and a baked or roasted potato as part of dinner. Healthy snacks that require some work to get to (like unshelled nuts and dried fruit, or pre-cut servings of cheese and veggies kept in the fridge) and chilled glasses of filtered water (with those zero calorie flavor drops) next to his chair during the day. Some walking - mainly to get to the fridge to refill his water cup or get some cheese.

On edit - We eat a lot of fish; one of my co-workers goes deep-sea fishing one weekend a month, and comes back with a lot of fish filleted and flash-frozen on the boat that he gives out around the office. I usually end up with one pan-fry fish meal, and then pickle the rest for a week or so worth of sandwiches (use rye or sourdough - least glycemic) along with a home-made pickled slaw.

Pickling using lemon, lime, and orange peel instead of sugar is a good way of quickly preserving excess meats (you have to roast poultry, but you can get away with simply browning fish and red meats before you pickle them) and vegetable left-overs. Just make sure you get the colored portion of the peel; the pith (or white) is very bitter.

but I've now been 1 year and 6 months without my best friend. He was pushing 400lbs and went to the doctor feeling bad, they sent him straight to the hospital and he never came out. He had some kind of infection and they said his weight was directly responsible for him not being able to overcome it.

I still cry on a fairly regular basis because invariably something happens during the day and I think OH I gotta tell Rob...awwww fuckin fuckin shit....and then I laugh because he was the funniest guy I have ever known and I know he would have found whatever triggered my need to call him funny.

But as much as I hate that he's gone it's way worse for his wife. We have dinner with her at least weekly and sometimes more and we never run of things to laugh and talk about but she misses him terribly. I don't want that for your sweet wife.

Shit, I know you don't need me to tell you all this. You're doing the right thing and I am so happy for you and your loved ones that you are. Rock on, my friend!

The weather having finally gotten cool enough that I can go outside without dying. Heretofore I've been humping up and down a 30' hall in my apartment, which is just about exactly as boring as you might think. Getting outside was nice, and it wasn't too bad doing the half-mile (to the entrance of my complex and back, which is convenient). The last thousand yards was a bit of a strain. Took about 25 mins.

Still, not too bad for somebody who had to learn to walk again 11 months ago.

Then to prove it was no fluke I did it again. My back is killing me, now. I guess I can gracefully submit to doing one a day for awhile now that I've proved to my own satisfaction that I'm a badass.

I'd only suggest what you probably already know: you don't want to lose 100 pounds, you want to lose five. Five at a time. Quick weight loss is bad for your health and never, ever stays off.

cowboys hate walking, it means you got bucked off or otherwise lost a horse and I have a lot of cowboy in my background LOL! also bad knees. a vicious circle there - hurts to walk, get fatter not walking. but I really need to lose some weight and get into better shape. like you, my health is generally good, I have a physical job, my bloodwork is mostly OK (thyroid is whacked, but sugar and cholesterol are fine) but the weight is affecting the joints and my quality of life so I need to get moving for sure.

you're on the right track. A mile in 20 minutes is pretty good for most folks, though I've been told that 15 minutes is standard, whatever that means.

Do you drive long haul, short runs or local? I have done all three but mostly I drove long haul for a total of 15 years, but I was always skinny. I needed to eat well to keep weight on. I did a number of things to make myself eat well... I ate only salads and soups and maybe one entre a day, a little more on days when I had to fingerprint an entire load of whatever was in the trailer, had to replenish after that much physical activity. I drank only water except for my morning coffee, I still do that. It was hard trying to find healthy food at truck stops so I would go grocery shopping for things like a box of triscuits and a wedge of cheese and nibble on that with some fruit or veggies that could stay "good" while traveling. Though I love cake, I rarely touch the stuff. You might discover after eating less junk foods and meats that after about a month, you will have less craving for those things and be more interested in more nutrient dense foods that have less weight-gain potential.

Carbs come in two types, complex carbs - the good kind, and simple carbs - the bad kind. Complex carbs come from natural things like potatoes, whole grains, rice, the sugars in fruits and veggies; simple carbs come in processed items like white bread, cakes, soda, canned foods and other highly processed stuff. I call that cellophane food, it comes in wrapping or packages/cans.

Also, eat less meat, it's something I eat about twice a week at most and often less than five times a month, there are so many preservatives, antibiotics and other crap that comes with it that it isn't as healthy as one might imagine, unless you eat wild game, even then meat is best when not eaten often.

As for cooking, try baking or grilling rather than pan frying or frying at all, when you do "fry" food try to use olive oil instead of corn oil or safflower oils - those are highly processed and the quality of the stuff is bereft of nutrients. The less processing used on what you eat, the better.

Just sayin'... eating well costs less than processed and/or junk food anyway, could really help with reaching your goal and make you feel pretty good too.

I wish you (and companions in this venture) great success in getting there.

That makes it a lot easier for me to eat right. I just haven't been doing it until now.

As far as meat goes, my wife and I eat quite a bit of it but we are going to be changing that. Our first step is to cut out red meat and eat more fruits and veggies. We've done that this past week and we did well. We've also cut out most of the processed foods.

Last week was our first week doing this, so I'm sure our diet will improve as we go. I can't go straight from eating a lot of meat to a vegan diet, but I can start working toward that taking it a bit at a time.

It would be great to keep on putting up seven point sixes every week. But I know it's just that the deficit between what I had been eating and what I'm eating now is so large relative to maintaining my weight, and I've heard that in the early going we lose a lot of water weight, that big numbers are likely in the beginning.

For those of you who think that 15 pounds is excessive over a week and a half, I assure you that I'm doing everything right. I'm just eating right and walking. I'm not starving myself or killing myself with activity.

I'm trying to lose about 25 pounds myself. I've cut most carbs and all white sugar out and as a result... have gained nearly 5 pounds this month Still, I like to think I'm looking more toned than before.

Coke Zero and Stevia are not bad, really. I had to change this anyway, as my blood glucose levels were getting really high and are normal now.

Good luck, Tobin!

56. Consider the DASH diet
Sun Oct 11, 2015, 10:55 AM
Oct 2015

For me it has become a way of life. I combine that with watching caloric intake and have dropped 60 pounds in the last year. First it helps you lose the water weight which can lead to rapid weight loss and get you the encouragement you need to press on. Then once you get used to what you can eat, it becomes sustainable. It is also heart healthy, which helps you with exercising.

I know that what has worked for me may not be the best thing for everyone else. But there's no denying it can help.

And it may work well for me for the rest of my life- lots of fruits and veggies, no red meat, minimal processed foods, no beer, watching the caloric intake, and walking.

Right now I'm taking in 1500-2000 calories a day. I walk 1.5 miles a day through the week and 3 to 4 miles a day on the weekends. I also work 50 hours a week.

That's what I'm doing for weight loss. When I get down to my desired weight, I'll keep walking and eat the same kind of diet but I'll up the calories to what is appropriate to maintain my weight. That will allow for more comfort food.

It's working really well for me right now. I hopped on the scales this morning and I've lost 25.4 pounds since the OP.

58. Have you lost all that in just one month?
Sun Oct 11, 2015, 12:24 PM
Oct 2015

Way to go!

It will slow down, and you'll have plateaus which might last for a few months, AND you're building muscle which weighs more than fat, so pay more attention to how you're feeling than to the weight. Be totally happy when your clothes get too big. Do you have clothes that are smaller? It helps when you can fit into old clothes that you could no longer wear. Have that be one of your goals. Every time you can put something on that was too small before it's a huge victory.

May I suggest you make a large pot of vegetable soup to eat when you just want to ease your hunger. Try putting all kinds of vegetable mixtures in. I use ademame, lima beans, green peas and sometimes black eyed peas because each bean has a different taste and consistency and I always include baby brussel sprouts, broccoli and asparagus. Each one has a different taste and I vary the vegetables so it doesn't get boring. I make a huge pot that lasts me a week and every day I take the vegetables (without the water) to work for lunch. I eat them cold at work. I spice the soup with chicken bullion and some lemon juice.

It's pure health food, very satisfying and filling and you can doctor it up for taste with spices.

My wife commented that it's like putting up Biggest Loser numbers. But I know, like you said, that it won't be like that after I've dropped more weight. The weekly losses will probably get smaller the closer I get to my desired weight unless I really ramp up the activity. But I don't have time to work out 7 hours a day like they do on the TV show.

I wear bib overalls all the time and I do have several pairs that are too small for me. However, I've already dropped a pants size and have resurrected a couple of pair that were too tight. My wife has a picture of me when we first met that I was about 300 pounds in. That's my first big goal- to get down below 300.

My wife can put her arms around me completely now and I can cross my legs when I sit. Those things were impossible for me for a long time until this week. The only meat I eat now is chicken and seafood. I'm slowly moving toward a vegetarian diet. I've also increased the distance on my daily walks. I started out doing a mile a day, and I could barely get through that. Now I walk at least 1.5 miles a day and sometimes 3 miles and I feel great.

It's starting to get cold here, but I am in luck as far as exercise goes. We have a treadmill in the back room that's been dormant for a long time. My plan is to dig it out and fire it up this weekend. It won't be as interesting as walking outdoors, but at least I'll be able to exercise when the really cold weather comes and the snow flies.

For those of you wondering how a person can healthily lose over 10 pounds in a week, here you go. I am a big guy to begin with, so the combination of being extra large and a male help me post big numbers like that here in the beginning stages. I eat a lot of fruits and vegetables and keep my caloric intake to between 1500 and 2000 a day. I eat three good meals a day and maybe one snack. No refined sugar, no red meat, and no alcohol. I drink mostly water and I drink at least 5 liters of it a day. I don't drink any of my calories. I walk about 15 miles a week and I'm increasing that as I go. I also work 50 hours a week, but I'm not sure how much that helps.

If you lost one, that's a good sign!

One thing I noticed in the past - if I hit a plateau, adding a small cheat made the next week a good weight loss week. Don't know why it worked, and it wasn't a major cheat, just one meal where I had a little something special (i.e., Bearnaise sauce (just a little) on my veggies). Weird, but worked every time for me. That was when I was doing weight watchers and rigorously sticking to my points and using my points for good food and nothing bad.

I lost 60 pounds with Weight Watchers, nothing else worked. eating the WW way basically involves some of the things said by others posting in this thread: whole fresh foods; as little processed food as possible, lots of fresh fruits and vegetables, lean protein, reducing refined carbohydrates from your diet and portion control.

I am also a big believer in no artificial sweeteners ever. I think Diet Soda is an abomination. My diet drink of choice is unsweetened iced tea or water.

Keep up the good fight!

Your doing a superb job. Keep at it. Any chance of you getting into a gym now that it's getting colder?

At my gym, I have fallen in love with my elliptical machine. I hate to run and don't like the shocking my knees take from it. I can now do 45 minutes +5 minute cool down with settings for my age/weight. When I get off the machine my shirt looks like I've been playing in a fire hydrant. As I peel my shirt off me it falls to the floor with a satisfying plop! That's when I know I did some work today. I typically burn about 500+ calories a session. Not including my weights routine before the elliptical machine.

If you make it to a gym, I ask you to please consider a weight training routine. Big guys like us are already naturally strong & if you do a simple weight routine to go along with your walks? Oh boy, your gonna be diesel in no time.

My wife loves the "V" shape that I've attained & is now constantly criticizing me for continuing to wear such baggy pants/shirts. The last hole on my belt is not enough to keep my pants from sliding down all the time. Now even my 2xl shirts are WAY too big now.

Great work Tobin. It feels like your getting younger, right?

I don't think I'm going to be able to do the gym deal. We just can't afford the extra expense right now. However, we do have a treadmill in the back room that I can use this winter. It's just buried under a bunch of stuff right now. Digging it out will be a good workout in itself.

Speaking of exercise and lifting weights. I may have a new job pretty soon that requires a lot more physical activity than my current job. I'll be driving a flatbed truck hauling steel parts. It requires tarping and strapping loads, a lot of climbing up and down on the trailer, carrying parts into a customer, and helping unload heavier objects.

It does feel like I'm getting younger and it looks like it too in my face. I have a lot more energy now and it's easier for me to get around in general.
