The DU Lounge
Related: Culture Forums, Support ForumsThey ask me "Paper or plastic?" at the grocery store.
I don't know.
I'm 74.
Which is 'better' or 'worse'?
So I bought cloth reusable bags.
But then I forget to bring them.
Did I mention that I'm 74?
Now I just say "Doesn't matter, I bi-sacksual."
Thank you.
I'll be here all week.
Don't forget to tip the staff.

Don't use plastic unless somehow you can recycle it. My city will recycle plastic bags so I do that for the few I use for produce and stuff like that.
BTW, I'm almost 72. Routines work!

(29,414 posts)and don't always remember to take them with me. However, there's probably a dozen more in my car, or the ones I don't use as much for various reasons (too small, too weird, too old and ratty, or insulated.)
My only problem is underestimating just how many bags I'll need for any particular visit. Most times I have enough, but every now and then I have to use the plastic bags (because I go with U-Scan unless I'm at Whole Foods.)

(149,727 posts)But they will give us paper, so as a result, I have a cupboard FULL of them!
I try very hard to take enough cloth bags! Plus they give me a nickel off my bill for each bag! Yeah, a whole 5 cents!

(29,414 posts)Hmmm, dime bag...
I doubt they'll ever ban plastic bags here. The companies here that make the plastics for them would raise hell. I can still take excess bags to the grocery store for recycling. The rest I use for things I want to take immediately to the trash, like citrus peels or other fruit/veggie waste. If I lived in a house, all of that would go into a compost instead.
Here's where I've bought most of my bags, both cloth and nylon: ReUseIt

(63,912 posts)I ry to remember the paper bags and request them when I can (often it delays the order being rung up until the bags can be located. I already have a time length on my stay in the supermarket: no more than 45 minutes. If I overstay and am on my feet for longer I suffer with lower back pain and am on the cold pack the rest of the afternoon...

(28,394 posts)I would prefer them because they are just the right size for the kitchen trash can. I hate those little plastic bags. I use two a day for trash. And they never decompose.

(2,682 posts)I'm caught in a dilemma: While I would rather use cloth reusable bags, the garbage hauler requires used kitty litter to be double bagged in plastic. There isn't a reasonably priced alternative to plastic shopping bags for used litter.
We have three cats and four litter boxes which means lots of used litter.

(26,346 posts)What's really strange to me is going to Home Depot here and getting a huge old timey brown paper bag. It reminds me of going to the grocery store when I was a kid.

(2,328 posts)When I bring the one from the car in (w/ groceries), I hang it on the door with the other one and grab it on the way out next time I'm going to use the car. If I'm walking to the store, well then it's just on the door on the way out again.
My town passed a plastic bag ban and a nickel fee for a paper bag, I thought it would be obnoxious, but I've completely adapted.
Easy peasy lemon squeezy.
I do sometimes forget to bring the bag with me from the car to the store though.

(35,760 posts)But I tell them "no bag" and put the items in the cart and bag when I get to my car.
I'm so well known for my forgetfulness about the bag that I once heard the bagger say to the checker: "Oh, it's the 'no bag' lady."
Yeah, well, there's "bag lady" and "no bag lady." I'm the latter.
Somebody please tell my husband that you don't have to buy a $1 or 2 bag every time you go to the grocery, 'cuz yeah, that's what he does. I have a station wagon full of bags and I still can't remember to take them into the supermarket.

She had some really neat cloth bags so had to ask her where she got them. QVC and they also have the ones for cold or frozen items. I'm sure they weren't cheap but should last a long time.
