In medicine, an avulsion is an injury in which a body structure is forcibly detached from its normal point of insertion by either trauma or surgery (from the Latin avellere, meaning "to tear off"
.[1] The term most commonly refers to a surface trauma where all layers of the skin have been torn away, exposing the underlying structures (i.e., subcutaneous tissue, muscle, tendons, or bone). This is similar to an abrasion but more severe, as body parts such as an eyelid or an ear can be partially or fully detached from the body.

ahh ranch life. husband got injured by a cow yesterday. we were loading some animals into a trailer and one turned back on him, hit his left index finger where he was trying to shut a steel gate on her. along with bone breakage at the tip, the more serious damage was an avulsion injury to the palm surface of the two end joints. ick. even made me squeamish and I have hundreds of photos of my own leg wound from last year.
we rushed around like idiots, went to the local hospital and they sent us in to UMC (where the Lounge donated a teevee and dvd player to the Staff break room in MFM's memory). I figured he would be in surgery and I would have to grab a hotel or something, but they doped him up pretty good (morphine and dilaudid), sewed the meat back into place, gave us a couple of scripts and sent us home!
there is a pretty good chance it won't take because it was really loose and the color was bad but they said trying this first was worth it because if it does work it would be a hell of a lot better than trying to patch it up. that can be tried it this doesn't work. so if your fingers are functional, maybe cross them for him.
in the meantime he is doing pretty good even though he is bandaged up like a cartoon.
