Search for Meanings & Distribution of 11 Million Surnames

Do a little family name digging - type in your surname and get some info about its origins, etc.

My family's name was changed over the past century or so, probably because the immigration people couldn't make it out and said, "What the hell, let's just call this family the ..." and so it began.

With the result that everyone who has my surname can all be traced back to a single immigrant ancestor, and the geographical distribution of the name still largely reflects where his sons settled after the Revolutionary War.

although I am not really sure since I visited my Grandfather's and Great-Grandparent's graves a few months ago and there is some dispute about the spelling of the name… my Great Grandfather (on my Dad's side) came over from Denmark and somewhere between him and my Grandfather getting out of the Army there is an I added

I'm going to share this with my mom.

My last name is around the 45,000th most common, so it's not really common but not rare.

My wife's last name is the 110th most common name in the world. Then again, she is Korean. If you went into a crowded room and yelled the last name you'd probably have quite a few people looking at you.

So they took their Grandfather's name, added the patronymic and ditched the "s". Everyone with the same spelling of my last name is related.
