The REAL Lucky the Dog has passed.
She was a good and loyal dog who came into our family when I was driving home one night about 15 years ago. A puppy, later determined to be about three months old, darted in front of my car and was then nearly hit by a bus. I knew she was not long for the world unless someone picked her up. So I took her home. I put up fliers in the area where she was found, but nobody called. I tried to give her to lots of people, but nobody I knew wanted a dog. So a week passed, then a month. At some point she got a name. After a while, she was a part of the family.
In the past year, Lucky handled her ailments with dignity. But, eventually, the medication didn't seem to help enough. Another Michigan winter is approaching. When we realized that she was having a hard time even standing long enough to eat, we knew it was "that time." The end was humane and quick. The pain is over.

(7,499 posts)I know how much it hurts, but she was so fortunate to find a good and loving family and was blessed with a long life. Losing a beloved pet is hell, pure and simple.
My husband and I are facing the same difficult decision you had to make. Our fifteen year old bichon, Henry, is in declining health. He's blind, his hind legs are giving out, he has Cushing's disease, and he has all the signs of dementia. We know the humane thing is to let him go to the Rainbow Bridge, but we're having a terrible time letting go.
Sending hugs and warm wishes your way...

(2,560 posts)Best dog ever. Smartest dog ever.
He was operated on two years before for Wobbler syndrome. He was never the same but was making good progress thanks to a wonderful animal physiotherapist.
One night, he started coughing really badly. At first, i thought it was just (in Dutch: kennel hoest) kennel cough. The next day, the cough was gone but he just wanted to lie on his bed. Not a problem...he was nearly 11 years old and obviously hadn't been feeling too well the day before. But after a few days, he hadn't improved so we took him to the vet. The vet wasn't very optimistic but he gave us some medicine to see if it would help. It seemed to, but not fantastically. The vet gave us some more medication and at first the results were positive, but didn't last long.
But then we realised it had gone too far. Ripper had cardiomyopathy (not uncommon in Dobermanns). He was having trouble breathing. He also couldn't eat.
So, we called the vet...
My wife, daughter and myself hugged him as he went to sleep.
My wife and I still cry when we think about him.
So, we know your pain (as do many on DU).
You have our condolences. It's hard to accept the loss.

nor speak of me with tears,
but laugh and talk of me
as if I were beside you...
I loved you so --
'twas Heaven here with you.

(31,404 posts)Lucky was indeed one lucky pup. It's so hard to see our fur babies
leave our families. But they do live in our hearts--and our dreams--and she knew
how much she was loved.
Hugs to you and your family.

(15,224 posts)15 years ago when she chose you. Thank you for saving her and for giving her a good life with lots of love. And thank you for knowing when she didn't want to be here any more, and doing the right thing by her.
When the next one chooses you...and you know it will - Lucky will smile down from the Rainbow Bridge knowing that another will be "lucky", as well.
Peace and comfort to you!
