The DU Lounge
Related: Culture Forums, Support ForumsI just had the phone call every dad wants.
My daughter just got accepted to her first job (except waiting tables in college). She interned last summer
at the Federal Reserve bank in Richmond, Va. and applied for a permanent position upon her April graduation.
(Math major). Starting pay is 53,500 a year. This girl was raised on the end of a dirt road by an ignorant
bricklayer, a single dad. She is a devout Democrat, and a Bernie supporter. I'm very happy.

(54,256 posts)The ability to accurately lay up a brick wall indicates intelligence.
It takes math and knowledge of spatial relationships.
The fact that you post on DU further indicates at least a modicum of intelligence.
Don't sell yourself short.
And congrats on your daughter's good fortune.

(25,816 posts)Grandfather and mother were both teachers. I was an honors student in college, but dropped out to be a bricklayer.
Therein lies the ignorance. I've never regretted it. It's a good life if you don't weaken.
I bought land, built my house, paid it off, and now can live on the cheap.

(54,256 posts)I was an English and journalism major.
Fancied myself s pretty good writer.
Made a living at one time or another, in school and after, as a newspaper reporter.
That really hones your chops.
You learn to be clear and concise.
More information in fewer words.
Planned to write The Great American Novel and become rich and famous.
And then I joined the air guard, went to USAF pilot training and all that went out the window.
I found that I REALLY liked flying.
So that's what I did for 30+ years.
I would have paid them to let me do it.
Trans World Airlines until they became comatose in the late 80s.
Then Nippon Cargo Airlines for my last ten years of gainful employment.
On a scale on 1 to 10, flying passengers came in at around 7.
Flying cargo was a solid 10.
Doing what you actually like to do makes for a happy life.

(5,279 posts)She is a politically aware progressive Democrat with a college degree in mathematics starting work at an employer who is the base on the national economy; I find myself reluctant to accept your self description as "ignorant".
If nothing else you gave her the tools she used to achieve what she did so in such a short time.
Congratulations to the both of you.

(31,405 posts)Panader0, you have every right to be pleased. But I'm going to take
exception with you calling yourself "ignorant". You might not be formally
educated--with advanced degrees--but that doesn't mean you are ignorant.
Happy Thanksgiving!

(25,816 posts)Yeah, I read to her (and her three sibs) and coached her softball team etc., but I was amazed how natural growing up is.
I gave love, food, shelter and a bit of instruction, but growing up is natural.

(45,984 posts)My son was nearly expelled from high school at the end of his freshman year. Fortunately, the community in which were lived had a excellent alternative education and we were able to take advantage of it. He knew he was getting as second chance and that only the children of filthy rich and well-connected families get more than that. At that time, he was teetering around with a 0.8 GPA and smoking dope with his "friends" when he should have been in class. When he graduated, he was cited for academic excellence I couldn't have been prouder.
I can point to one particular thing I did right. At the end of his sophomore year, he was named student of the month. The next morning, he had to go to class and approached me with the framed certificate he received in a ceremony the evening before. He tried to give it me. I asked him why he thought I should have it.. "Isn't this what you waned?" I told it thought it very mice, but "I didn't do anything to earn this, you did. It's yours." It was like a light went on over his head. He realized that any bad time I gave him about getting his school work done was for his benefit, not my personal aggrandizement. I don't know where he ranks that in his personal experiences, but it was the single most satisfying moment of life.
He graduated from San Jose State a couple of years ago, but things being as they are he's been taking classes to become a computer technician. He will persevere.
