Help! A friend's storage unit has been locked.

They claim she didn't pay her rent. She says she did, and I believe her. She also told me the place is in an area with a lot of homeless people, and they've had issues (we don't have problems in CA ) with them living in the units. She thinks they may think she's one of them.

Here's the thing: She uses the unit to store her crafting supplies. Her biggest show of the season is Saturday in SF. Which means the damn thing has to be opened tomorrow, or else. Where does she turn? Law enforcement? Which branch (local police or county sheriff)?

1. Does she have any way to prove she paid? A receipt, or a cashed check?

Otherwise, I have no idea.

Good luck to her!

You're a good friend to help her.

6. The bank makes an autopayment by mail.

The storage place won't accept an electronic transfer. So all she has is proof that they mailed it.

10. She actually would have more than that.

Depending on which way her bank processes those kinds of payments, she'd either have a withdrawal from her account of the funds when the payment was drawn or she'd have the cancelled check the bank would have printed and mailed drawn on her account. She might have to ask the bank for the second one though, they don't always send them to the customer anymore. If they draw a check on her account and it was never deposited by the locker-owner, that's a different cup of worms entirely. (The check would have to be cancelled but the money would still be in her account as the check was never resolved (that is, it wasn't cashed or deposited)) and is still outstanding.

Because the bank processes her automatic payments, they're required to provide her with proof-upon-demand that they're actually making the payments. Most banks also guarantee to resolve any payment disputes arising from the use of their service. If the payment was not made by cause of their error, they're also potentially liable for reasonable expenses resulting from their error.

The only way I can see that her payment wouldn't have been made was if she had insufficient funds at the time the payment was due. This isn't a crisis in any case...it's a take a deep breath moment, there's nothing that can be done at 8PM on Thanksgiving. I can help you resolve this tomorrow AM for her, provided the bank is open.

Because I won't get dressed, go downtown on the light rail that runs every half-hour on holidays, and help her move stuff in her office.

As you can imagine, she's in kind of a state right now.

9. I'm so sorry! I'm sure she's in a state right now, but taking it out on you is awful.

I'd cut her some slack, if I were you..........and if you're big-hearted enough to do that. Once the crisis is over, she will hopefully realize what you did for her.

Yikes.

This thing is time-sensitive. Her show is on Saturday.
