Oh yeah, I quit smoking about a week ago. Here's what worked for me.

Last edited Sat Dec 5, 2015, 09:06 AM - Edit history (1)

First of all, I quit because I got really pissed off.

1. The state upped cig taxes .25$ a pack.
$2.50 a carton. They wanted me to pay over $70 for my 'enjoyment'. It still pisses me off that politicians take advantage of us addicts to raise revenue.

2. So I started cutting back from a pack a day.
I discovered that I didn't need the full dosage of nicotine that an entire cigarette gave me. Why should the manufacturer dictate my dosage? First, I quit smoking an entire cig at once. I found a half would satisfy. Then a bit less. Eventually two or three puffs was enough. Understand that I didn't throw these half smoked cigs away. I relit them three or four times.
In other words, I was TAPERING OFF.
I was slowly decreasing my dependence.
On the last morning, I had a couple of puffs off the last butt with my first cup of coffee. Morning coffee and evening Scotches are still the hardest times.

3. THEN I learned that smoking 'MIGHT' have contributed to my macular degeneration. I'm smoking myself blind. That was the clincher.
And why didn't my ophthalmologist mention that? I'm gonna ask him at my next appointment.

3. I did NOT declare that I would/had quit smoking. I just said I'd never BUY another pack. And that's it.
I won't.

Oh yeah, there was that bout of bronchitis three weeks ago that made it VERY hard to smoke.

You might say that it was a confluence of several things that got me to where I am now.

Anyway...I'm OK with it.
Good luck to you if you smoke.

I hit two years tomorrow. What has really amazed over that time is calculating how much money I didn't spend on such things.

I can't say I saved the money, but it was still a good way to quantify my progress.

I don't count the cost of lighters, however, since I still use those

I didn't post this to brag.
Just thought it might help some other poor bastard who's thought about quitting.

THE MESSAGE IS: Don't try 'cold turkey'.
It's not likely to work.
Taper off and your chances are better.
It's been relatively painless for me.

The cost was the main thing that got me to quit. Then, after I had been off the cigarettes for a few weeks, I started feeling a lot better. I just felt really good for the first time probably since I started smoking. That sealed the deal for me. It's been about 3.5 years now without any tobacco or nicotine replacement products. I smoked for about 20 years.

In that period of time, if I had not quit smoking, it would have cost us over $11,000. That's money that we simply didn't have, let alone to be spending it on a bad habit. Cigarettes are up about $5 a carton here in the time that I quit. I used to smoke a carton a week.

may I suggest about 10 deep breaths if you have an urge. Air is free and hopefully not too polluted.

For the same reason as yours....I got pissed off.
Really pissed off, at the news that tobacco companies were deliberately increasing the amount of nicotine in cigs to keep us addicted
( which they are still doing)
Anger is a great motivator.

first 4 days was tough, then I had mild cravings off and on for a few months, which I just observed and they always passed within a minute or 2.

I DID stop drinking coffee, which is a common trigger, I switched to tea because I never liked the combo of tea and cigs.

Because I was deadly serious about quitting, it was not that bad of a problem, i found.

Wishing you luck and abstinence, one day at a time.

I knew I had to quit, breathing was getting harder and harder and I had been rolling the cigs because of the high cost so when the last bag of tobacco was gone I used the patch for a few weeks.

Went off the patch when I started breaking out and went on the Zyban that the dr. had ordered for me a few months previously.

I can say the patch made it easier but I still do get a craving and I've changed my habits to stay away from the areas that I used to smoke in.

Driving down to Milwaukee for Thanksgiving was hard but I did manage to put it out of my mind for the most part and my daughter still smokes but it really didn't bother me. I did miss going out to the garage for one but got over that too.

I really don't know if I feel better or not, smoked for a very long time so might not make all that much difference but I have to stop eating, the hand to mouth action as packed on a lot of pounds.

If you offered me a smoke I'd sure take it.
I'll just never again spend money on them.
Period.
I'm not real big on self-discipline or self-sacrifice, or whatever, but I made this vow and I'm stickin' to it.

I hope to get there myself soon. I feel the time is coming soon. Kind of over it but need to come up with a plan that will work for me. I've quit in the past--went a year once. It will happen again.

Pack a day to gradually half a pack.

Last time I quit I went Cold turkey but didn't have any kind of plan. I would go a few days and then bought a pack, smoked a few, threw pack away, went a few days without, bought a pack, etc. Eventually I just started to buy packs again and again.
