Can't Get Enough Star Wars? All about the Sequels, Spinoffs and What's Next

http://www.people.com/article/star-wars-spin-off-sequel-news

From left: Wen Jiang, Felicity Jones, Diego Luna, Donnie Yen and Riz Ahmed in Rogue One: A Star Wars Story

Star Wars mania isn't going to slow down any time soon, so let's start with a countdown to the next film!

In a mere 341 days (Dec. 16, 2016), the first of three Star Wars spinoffs from Lucasfilm, Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, hits theaters. Starring Oscar nominee Felicity Jones (Theory of Everything) and directed by Gareth Edwards, Rogue One tells the story of the rebel fighters who banded together to steal the Death Star plans from the Empire.

Producer Kathleen Kennedy told Starwars.com, "Rogue One takes place before the events of Star Wars: A New Hope and will be a departure from the saga films but have elements that are familiar to the Star Wars universe. It goes into new territory, exploring the galactic struggle from a ground-war perspective while maintaining that essential Star Wars feel that fans have come to know."

Five months after Rogue One, the still-unnamed Episode VIII blasts into theaters on May 26, 2017. Production kicks into high gear in the new year, and will feature most of The Force Awakens cast: Daisy Ridley, John Boyega, Oscar Isaac, Carrie Fisher, Mark Hamill, Adam Driver, and of course, BB-8.

2. Only now do I finally care about Star Wars because Donnie Yen is in this movie.

If they (have the balls to) turn him loose for the fight scenes, we will all be quite pleased. Donnie will finally get the recognition he has long deserved.

Gee I noticed Harrison Ford's name is not mentioned about. I wonder why?

3. It takes place before Episode IV which was done in the 70's

So you'll need a 40 years younger looking Ford. They'll need to find a Harrison look alike for the Han Solo movie in 2018.

Reading that snippet spoiled the current Star Wars movie for me.

(But I think you can figure out.)

4. My worry is they are going to overkill it with the Star Wars movie to the point of annoyance

I think what made Star Wars special to me was that the movies were special occasions - something that happened once every few years and then a decade or so between trilogies. Sure for me I knew there were books, websites, video games and comic books out there also related to Star Wars but I was never into that stuff - just the films.

But I feel like if they start making a new Star Wars film every year even if it's a different group out there in the Star Wars world, it's going to somehow dilute the magic that surrounds the Star Wars world. I quit watching Star Trek and X-Men movies because it's just too many and too over-kill to the point I just don't care about these characters anymore.

But that's just my two cents!

7. Honestly I don't hate the second trilogy

It could have been waaaaaaay better but it wasn't that bad. I thought each movie got a bit better than the last one.

However, the solution to solving the issue of a poorly done prequel isn't overloading the fans with too many new Star Wars movies. It will take something that is very special and turn it into another mindless repetitive overblown blockbuster movie. Seriously how many Ironman movies has Robert Downey Jr done between the stand alones and all the group movies and cameos? I think I'd rather watch paint dry than to watch all those movies.

I thought Revenge of the Sith was good overall - the battle with Obi Wan vs General Grievous was excellent, as was the final showdown between Anakin and Obi Wan... the Order 66 betrayal of the Jedi scene was well done - even though most of those characters were immaterial, I still grieved for them as they fell.

More than offset the fact that some of the dialogue was terrible... really, how many people would say, "You're going down a path I cannot follow."??? And, I thought Ewan McGregor was good in the first two movies, but seemed to be phoning it in for Revenge of the Sith. (I can almost justify the Anakin/new Darth Vader "NOOOOOOO" by saying it was his final burst of emotion before becoming the emotionless & machinelike Darth Vader. Almost.)

could not possibly care less about the planned prequels and spinoffs. If there's any story less interesting than the Han Solo origin, it would be the Boba Fett origin, and apparently we're getting both.
