6 Questions for Music Lovers - what was your favorites for 2015?

  1. Favorite album(s) from 2015
  2. Favorite song(s) from 2015
  3. Favorite reissue from 2015
  4. Favorite new band from 2015
  5. Favorite concert you saw in 2015
  6. Biggest News story for 2015 in the music world

My answers:

  1. Favorite album(s) from 2015: "Alone in the Universe" from Jeff Lynne's ELO would be my favorite with "Yours Dreamily" by The Arcs, "I Love You Honeybear" by Father John Misty and "Sing Into my Mouth" by Iron & Wine and Ben Bridwell as honorable mentions.
  2. Favorite song(s) from 2015: "When I was a Boy" by Jeff Lynne's ELO was my favorite. I think anyone who plays music or just loves music the way I do can appreciate the lyrics, pretty much an auto-biography of Jeff Lynne's life. Runner-ups are too many to name!
  3. Favorite reissue from 2015: Without a doubt that would be the reissue of "CODA", the last album from Led Zeppelin originally released in 1982, 2 years after the death of John Bonham. Essentially "CODA" was this throwaway album of all the songs that weren't good enough to make the first 8 albums as an attempt to release one last original album by Led Zeppelin. So in a nutshell "CODA" was always considered a shitty album. With the remaster and reissue of all 9 LZ albums, Page went pretty deep into the archives to add bonus materials. Most of the reissues were kinda lame but LZ1 and "CODA", Page did an aweseome job, especially with "CODA". He took this shitty album and somehow elevated to one of the better LZ albums (at least better than "Presense&quot .
  4. Favorite new band from 2015 I really don't have a favorite new band from 2015 but interested in recommendations from others!
  5. Favorite concert you saw in 2015 I would have to say the absolute favorite was seeing Jeff Lynne's ELO in NYC (one of only 2 concerts he did in the USA in the past 35 years). ELO is my #2 favorite band and it was awe-aspiring to be 20 feet from the man who inspired my love of music. Seeing Robert Plant in concert 3 times last year came in at a very close #2 (and standing 20 feet from him as he sang 'The Rain Song' - that man can still make me swoon). Third place would be seeing Father John Misty, which has to be one of the most entertaining musicians out there with innovated music and an amazing voice! I can't wait for the next FJM album!
  6. Biggest News story for 2015 in the music world - I was not a fan of Motorhead but the death of Lemmy Ian Kilmister was huge because this guy has been a part of the music industry and an innovator for decades. Also Steve Miller Band making the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame - AWESOME!!!

I listen mostly to electronica (both mainstream EDM and underground/down tempo stuff) which may not appeal to most people. That being said, my favorite artists who released new music this past year are The Chainsmokers, Rufus Du Sol and Duke Dumont. I was in Vegas back in October and as I was walking through The Venetian, they played one of Dumont's songs from 2014 so maybe my tastes aren't too eclectic.

My favorite song I heard for the first time in 2015 was actually released back in 2012 so I will skip it and offer up this fantastic remix from Zaxx of The Chainsmokers' "Roses" (a song whose original version is climbing the pop charts right now).

Sorry for not following the recommended format. I seldom buy full albums nowadays (the digital kind, let alone an actual physical copy of one).

Jamie XX "In Colour"
Bjork, "Vulnicura"
Kendrick Lamar, "To Pimp a Butterlfy"
Cécile McLorin Salvant, "For One to Love"

All the concerts I saw were jazz, so I'm going to pass on this one.

Biggest news story from 2015 has to be the way Adele almost singlehandedly revived the recording industry

Been a fan of him and Gillian Welch since the late 90s, and their new album (Nashville Obsolete) lives up to their songwriting and musicianship standards and then some. Favorite song changes from day to day, but probably this one:

If solo projects done by members of established bands counts, then my favorite new artist of 2015 would be Rhiannon Giddens
