I think "Walk Away Renee" was their first record, and it went to # 5 on Billboard.

As far as I could find out, they have apparently disbanded again...this time probably for good.

(I'm pretty sure I saw Wilson Pickett at least once at the old Fillmore as well.)
A great '90s film about the formation of a soul band in Dublin is called The Commitments"
and the very first song they work on is "Mustang Sally"
Near the end of the movie, they do a version of it that is so good it makes Wilson Picket's version pale in comparison.

Pattie Boyd: 'My hellish love triangle with George and Eric' - Part Two
On another occasion I drove to Ewhurst and we met in the woods nearby. Eric was wearing a wolf coat and looked very sexy. We didn't go to his house because someone would have been there. A lot of people lived at Hurtwood Edge: his band, the Dominos, Paula and Alice Ormsby-Gore, another of Eric's girlfriends.
The convent girl in me found the situation uncomfortable but strangely exciting, and so it was later that year after Eric had played me Layla in the South Kensington flat that I succumbed to his advances.
After George and Eric's confrontation at Robert Stigwood's party, I went home with my husband. Back at the house I went to bed and George disappeared into his recording studio.
The next time I saw Eric, he turned up unexpectedly at Friar Park. George was away I don't know whether Eric knew that in advance and I was on my own. He said he wanted me to go away with him: he was desperately in love with me and couldn't live without me. I had to leave George right now and be with him.
'Eric, are you mad?' I asked. 'I can't possibly. I'm married to George.'
He said: 'No, no, no. I love you. I have to have you in my life.'
'No,' I said.
He produced a small packet from his pocket and held it out towards me.
'Well, if you're not going to come away with me, I'm going to take this.'
'What is it?'
'Heroin.'
'Don't be so stupid.' I tried to grab it from him but he clenched his fist and hid it in his pocket.
'If you're not going to come with me,' he said, 'that's it. I'm off.'
And he went. I hardly saw him for three years.

Denise was Randy & the Rainbow's one & only hit.
I can't think of any oldie I love more than "Denise"....It's a perfect rock & roll song!
Trivia fact: "Denise" was written as a "homage" to Denise Walton, the prolific Brill Building songwriter who worked closely with Allan Freed, the DJ who coined the term "Rock & Roll"
A good, (but not totally accurate) TV movie made about Allan Freed is called:
"The King of Rock and Roll..The Allan Freed Story"

"Frankie & Johnny Were Sweethearts" is another great song.

(21,046 posts)Yep, the Chad Mitchell Trio. Couldn't find a video of it. Chad Mitchell left, and they were called The Mitchell Trio, and he was replaced by one Henry John Deutschendorf Jr. -- known to us as John Denver. That's John Denver you hear in the intro.
"You can't chop your mother up in Massachusetts, Not even if you're tired of her cuisine, You can't chop your mother up in Massachusetts, I know it's almost sure to cause a scene"
The Bee Gees first hit the charts in 1963. Hits were "To Love Somebody", "1941 New York Mining Disaster", "Massachusetts", "I Started a Joke" and many others.
Example of pre-disco Bee Gees. 1968-"Words"

(27,875 posts)I'm surprised it took so long for that great Leonard Cohen song to be mentioned.
"And she feeds you tea and oranges..that come all the way from China"

(27,875 posts)Little Richard was a huge influence on the early Beatles.
Their high-voiced wails came directly from listening to Little Richard records.
He was also a huge influence on Jimi Hendrix, who said that he wanted to do with his guitar what Little Richard did with his voice.
He's still alive, at 83, but he's been confined to a wheelchair since a 2009 hip surgery that went wrong:
"I went in for surgery on my hip..I was walking on my way in; but I couldn't walk out.
The hip surgery was really bad for me...I haven't walked since..I'm in pain 24 hours a day."
In 1955, after years on the "Chitlin' Circuit"..Little Richard's big break came when he signed with Specialty Records in New Orleans:
In the studio, Specialty's Producer Bumps Blackewll found a wild-dressing, wild-talking man with his hair waved up half a foot.
But Blackwell thought that the first tracks they recorded were too mild, too milquetoast, especially for a guy whose stage act was famously outlandish and untamed.
"If you look like Tarzan and sound like Mickey Mouse it just doesn't work out," Blackwell later explained.
Little Richard is not just a legend but one of the last people alive among that first wave of rock and roll, the prime movers and shakers.
"Keep Little Richard in your prayers..Praise and thanksgiving..And intercession too.
May he find comfort and ease.
May he find a little more of that old rhythm, a little more of that wild light."

(206 posts)Recorded and released by both Jessi Colter and Tanya Tucker around the same time.
I thought it was a pretty but sad song when I was a teenager but when I heard it recently I thought it was strange, about a man calling his current girlfriend by his last girl friend's name.
