Am I the only one who watched the U.S. Figure Skating championships?

Being home sick, I had an excuse to zone out in front of the TV, but I was really impressed with the ice dancers (a brother-and-sister team knocked everyone's socks off) and the "ladies'" (as they say) championship finals which featured some stunning performances.

The pairs competition always seems unnerving to me, though. Being thrown into the air to land possibly on one's head or on a sharp skate blade?

Joeybee and KamaAina are figure skating fans. However, Joeybee might be without power or getting his groove on in anticipation of the Patriots game--he might also have you on "Ignore" if you ever posted anything against his preferred team.

Growing up in Conn. a few towns away from Dorothy Hamill in the '70s will do that to you.

These days, I am mostly a fan of the surprisingly large number of San Jose-area skaters, such as Debi Thomas, Brian Boitano, Kristi Yamaguchi and Rudy Galindo. We have high hopes for up-and-comer Polina Edmunds as well.

due to the bruise injury to her foot. She couldn't do any flip or lutz jumps because of what occurred. The good news is that the American women came in 2nd, 4th and 10th overall and that we will definitely have medal contenders for the next Olympics.

Stunning finish!

I missed the pairs and dance, unfortunately, but hope to find them online soon.

The mens' is this afternoon. Should be good!

I love figure skating.

I think Max Aaron was robbed.

Chen is a very exciting newcomer though!

(Spoiler)

Nathan Chen completed FOUR quadruple jumps in his free skate program, a world record. And two in his short program, for a total of six this competition, also a world record.

Despite that, he came in third! Max Aaron completed two quad jumps but came in second. Adam Rippon did no quad jumps but still won the competition based on his overall score.

All three are worth watching online if you can find them.

Aaron is a great skater who performed very well in this competition.

I thought Adam Rippon was robbed as well. He only does one "quad", but apparently it is the most difficult quad to do, and no one else even attempts it. He landed that quad well. It seems like that should count for a lot. The rest of his skate was wonderful too.

What an exciting competition this year!

Love Javier Fernandez! I was so glad he did so well. But I'm sad for both Adam Rippon and Max Aaron, who skated wonderfully but didn't medal.

Very happy for Ashley Wagner too, finally getting the recognition she deserves.

I don't watch the pair competitions. I'm uncomfortable with seeing small women tossed around like rag dolls by large men. There's a misogynist undertone to it that gives me the creeps.

While checking Tennis Channel last week for the Miami open, I accidentally found the figure skating champ. listed on one of the sports channels and recorded several days worth! (I was watching tennis - doesn't anybody on DU obsess about professional tennis but me?) I used to watch the skating events all the time, knew all the skaters, but now I never know when or where they are going to be televised. Anyway, started to watch recorded events this AM; skating is so beautiful and terrifically difficult, very calming and inspiring to watch. I don't have the sports group on my favorites because there is no tennis ever listed as far as I can see. Sorry, but that's my only sport to watch, except skating, and some of the olympic sports, such as gymnastics and diving. For some reason I like individual, rather than team sports.

if I hadn't seen a reference to it in a Japanese newspaper. So much of the coverage has been moved to cable-only stations.

It just isn't promoted the way it used to be.

Neither is gymnastics.
