...something went horribly wrong with Pepper sometime last night. She's on her way to the emergency clinic now.
This morning I heard her in the basement -- I thought nothing of it because she's usually very chatty this time of day. But when I went to take her breakfast to her, she was curled up in a tight ball under a table where she never is, literally crying in pain. I tried to coax her out, but she could not walk. Her hind legs are totally gone. What I thought was "chat" was obviously pain. I tried stroking and petting her for awhile, but it seemed like when I did (especially around her hind quarters and underbelly) it bothered her, so I stopped. Her bowl was empty and her box looked like she had voided sometime in the night..so what happened???????????
I don't get this. She was fine last night. Jumping up on the chair, kneading my stomach, hopping from the chair to the end table...when I went to bed, she was where she usually is...asleep in the living room. She just had a checkup not two damn weeks ago.
I am so afraid that a decision is going to have to be made, and I'm not ready for it. I just went through a health scare of my own this week and I'm still trying to find my own balance. I'm worried about my kids, especially my younger son, who went with his dad to the vet's. He loves this cat dearly and is also on the autism spectrum, so I don't know how he is going to react. I just called my older son -- who sees Pepper as "his" cat -- a call I dreaded making but figured it would be better to let him know now what is happening.
I am sick on my stomach. Sorry for rambling, but I know you all are great animal lovers who will send a lot of good support and advice. To add insult to injury to this (or sick irony) -- our 5-year-old Dachshund has also become paralyzed due to spinal fusion.
Difference is, she's not in pain and Pepper really is.
Thanks, everyone. This is going to be a long, long day.

(13,776 posts)We lost a cat to this. She had a alight problem with a heart murmur all her life. This first happened when she was about 10-11 years old. Fortunately, it dislodged and didn't happen again for 2 years. The vet told us it would probably happen again. It didn't dislodge the second time, pain medication didn't help much, and we had to humanely euthanize her.
Vet had told us earlier about the heart murmur and potential problems. Also, that it was extremely painful. So we had the advantage of knowing what might happen and were "sort of" prepared for it.
Symptoms were continual "crying", alternating between curling up and trying to stretch out and walk. Back legs were not functional. The first time, she also urinated and defecated in her bed.
It was so sad, mostly because she was in so much pain.

(14,691 posts)cats are notorious for concealing illness. I have been there. Maybe it won't come to the point you fear though. Perhaps she injured herself jumping around?

(14,061 posts)I did just find a small amount of throw-up in the living room. Nothing really alarming from that, from what I could tell. I also walked around the basement but we keep it in pretty neat shape so I don't think she got into anything bad down there.
I don't know if she may have hurt herself some way -- just a lot of unanswered questions right now.

She passed in the arms of a good friend.
My heart is broken.

(34,393 posts)in 1984 from the exact same thing. He was a victim of pet food not having taurine, which caused cardiomyopathy, and he threw a clot. I know something about what you're going through. It was so much worse because it was such a shock to lose him in the prime of life.
Please know you're in my thoughts. I wish I could give you a hug. Again, I'm so very, very sorry.

(14,061 posts)...for the kind words, thoughts, and wishes.
My family and I are getting by, but we're hurting, and will be for awhile. We're taking comfort knowing that we gave her a good life, away from the dangers of the streets and the outdoors in general, and she had a very happy and comfortable life.
Still. It's hard, and it hurts, but it's good to know there are a lot of truly good people out there like yourselves who can offer more support than you realize.
Thank you all again.

(14,061 posts)Just perfect. Thank you.
We're all having our moments with it, but we're trying to remember how much we loved and enjoyed her. Still, it's odd not to see her trotting out at night looking for treats, or underfoot in the morning demanding breakfast while I unload the dishwasher, or...
All the little things.

(13,661 posts)She was slowing down a bit, but one morning she was reallllly slow. I held her as her heart stopped (vet said she had an enormous tumor in her liver - could have had palliative care, but I decided against it).
I know how hard it is.
