A friend died a rather horrible death over the weekend

not a particularly close friend, but still...

http://www.sfgate.com/news/article/Woman-in-wheelchair-struck-on-Market-Street-dies-6813630.php

A woman in a motorized wheelchair who was hit by a car in San Francisco while crossing Market Street died over the weekend, officials said.

Thu Phan, 38, of Berkeley was crossing Market near Seventh Street when she was struck around 10 a.m. Friday and thrown from her wheelchair, police and the city medical examiner said.

The driver was turning from Seventh onto Market, police said. It was unclear whether Phan was in a crosswalk or had the right of way. The driver remained at the scene and cooperated with officers.

Investigators were trying to track down surveillance-camera footage of the crash.

Thu did not strike me as the type to "jayroll". (Believe me, I've seen plenty of chair users who do. ) Certainly not across Market St., which is as crowded as, say, Broadway in NYC.

My fondest memory of Thu came a few years ago. With my usual exquisite sense of timing , I had thrown myself at her mere weeks after she had started a relationship with a normate (person without a disability). She felt bad enough that she offered to set me up with a friend of hers. Well, the whole thing worked exactly as well as you would expect a setup to work on a sitcom or in a B-movie. I knew I had blown it like a pyromaniac sneezing on his last match when the friend shook my hand as we parted!

Then again, if I had managed to hook up with Thu in the first place, I would have had a few wonderful years, but would at this moment be out on a ledge, with some people trying to talk me down and others yelling "Jump! Jump!".

and wondered if maybe her wheels got stuck or some kind of stall happened.

Sorry for your loss, she sounded hella cool.

I hadn't thought of that.

Hella cool indeed -- but not even the hella coolest person with a disability I know in the East Bay! That and walkability explain why I'm trying to get up there from "Sad Jose".

I know how you feel though - it happened in my neighborhood last week as well and my whole street is still reeling from it. It definitely sucks when something like this happens.
