Man Dies During Krispy Kreme Race That Challenges Runners to Eat 12 Doughnuts

http://www.thedailymeal.com/news/eat/man-dies-during-krispy-kreme-race-challenges-runners-eat-12-doughnuts/020916

The Krispy Kreme Challenge is an annual charity event held in North Carolina that challenges runners to feast on doughnuts and complete a five-mile run to raise money for a local children’s hospital. But this year, the challenge ended in tragedy after a 58-year-old participant died of a heart attack during the gluttonous race that’s described as “2400 calories, 12 doughnuts, 5 miles, 1 hour,” according to the Washington Post.

Shortly after the race kicked off, an unnamed man began having chest pains and was transported to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead. He never actually made it to the Krispy Kreme where runners congregate after the race.

“Unfortunately we have some sad news to share,” the group that organizes the unique race said. “We regretfully confirm that a participant of today’s Krispy Kreme Challenge has died. We are deeply saddened and wish to convey our heartfelt condolences to his loved ones.”

The Krispy Kreme Challenge began as a competition amongst students at the North Carolina State University to raise money for the local hospital, but has since grown into an annual headliner event that draws more than 65,000 runners each year. This is the challenge’s first fatality.

There are 4.2 grams of sugar per teaspoon...a measuring teaspoon, not the ones we eat cereal with.

Each Original Glazed Krispy Kreme donut has 10 grams of sugar
http://calorielab.com/restaurants/krispy-kreme/original-glazed/35/3696

times 12 donuts = 120 grams

so 120 divided by 4......30 teaspoons of sugar gulped down and then start running, to further speed up your heart.

On edit: Wiki says the runners go 2.5 miles to the doughnut shop, THEN eat the 12 doughnuts, then race back.

News reports say the poor man died in the first mile...so sugar was not a factor in the race.

You will always find groups of people selling them at the entrances to grocery stores.
They show up at office parties and coffee stands.
I ate 1/2 of one in the early 90's down here.
Can still taste it...made my teeth want to run and hide.

It's a shame he passed. But, he was doing what made him happy at the time.

Each quart sized original Gatorade has about half that amount of sugar and amateur athletes routinely drink 2 of those in the span of time it would take someone to run 2.5 miles. Energy drinks used by professional and serious amateur athletes typically have twice that amount of sugar(50-60g per 16oz serving). Strenuous exercise also burns up the sugar in the bloodstream and fat from the liver, so adding a huge amount of sugar after exercise has less of an effect on the body compared to not exercising, because the sugar will either be immediately used in the bloodstream or stored right back in the liver.

No thanks. Just the thought of eating a banana after a run makes my stomach turn, let alone donuts.
