I have no tolerance for cold

My hands and feet especially. I keep the temp at 70 and it still isn't warm enough in here, so I temporarily turn it up to 73 or 74.

It's 28 outside and dropping. Supposed to be in the single digits over night.

I've spent most of my life living in the south or California, so I must not have devolved somehow. I take heat just fine. It's a controversial thing to say, but I'd rather be hot than cold. Even though most people say you can always add more layers, but you can only take so much off (in public, at least).

The other night I thought I had a fever. I was shivering so much I thought it must be chills from the flu or something. Nope. I took my temperature and it was actually low. Not like hypothermia low, but below normal.

Just waiting to win the Power Ball so I can permanently move to some warm tropical paradise.

In the DC area, so it doesn't get cold that much. This week is the coldest it's been since I arrived. So maybe I will get used to it. Plus the living room is very drafty, so there is always cold air near the floor.

Maybe I will get used to it.

I now live in Houston.
I can't handle the weather dropping into the 50s down here and tend to wear a jacket until it hits about 70.

I still won't be wearing a jacket. All I wear are hooded sweatshirts. Jackets are too bulky for me, plus I am usually always warm. I have my fan going most nights in the winter, and not because of the white noise. I'm strange. Lol

I've lived in Minnesota almost my whole life; and while I can't say I'm crazy about subzero cold, I can deal with it. I keep my house at 66-68F and wear a sweater if I'm not moving around much. It's fine. However, I can't handle hot weather, especially if it's humid; it makes me miserable. I don't understand how anyone can stand the summers anywhere south of about Iowa. But obviously they do, so I think it's just something you adjust to over time.

Grew up in the south, in Memphis, where it actually did get quite cold at times AND humid. Mostly the west is drier and colder. I keep fantasizing about moving to Florida but it so beautiful here and a easier to take politically. I go back and forth about the idea. Being cold is absolute torture to me and it always has been.

I go with a t shirt with no sleeves, on top of that long sleeve heavy thermal long john shirt, on top of this a polyester fleece long sleeve military type with zip up neck which can be lowered to prevent sweating. Sweating in cold can kill you from hypothermia.
Bottom is long johns, I like BDU's on top for the pocket space. (Cargo twill pants).
Insulated boots are a must.
For coat I go with an N3 - B snorkel parka.
Good luck with the powerball!

12. Have you had your thyroid tested?
Sat Feb 13, 2016, 03:38 AM
Feb 2016

My brother, who used to run hot normally, went on a diet because he had gained so much weight. He found it almost impossible to lose weight so he doubled down on the diet, really cutting the calories. He slowly lost some weight. He found he was cold constantly. He said he was just chilled to the bone and couldn't seem to warm up. He just thought it was because he lost some weight. Wrong. One day he fainted at work. He had a bunch of tests and turns out he was hypothyroid and likely had been for a really long time (it actually affected his heart, which made him faint, he had to have his heart monitored for a month to make sure it was okay and that his meds were working).

Anyhow, intolerance for cold is a symptom. So is a lower than normal body temperature. So you might want to have that checked out. Also there's something called Raynaud's syndrome or something like that...it affects circulation in hands and feet and causes people to have intolerance for cold especially in hands and feet. A friend of my mom's had that.

I'm someone who tends to have an intolerance for extremes, and I get too hot or cold very easily. If I get to hot or too cold I will be near tears, but I find being cold much more tolerable because I"m used to it. I'm in Canada and I grew up sitting in hockey arenas. In my office at work, everyone complains about being cold and they run space heaters all day (but no one wants to put on a sweater, no one gives a crap about global warming apparently) so that the office is a stuffy dry hot place, and I hate it. It makes me feel like I'm going to vomit. I'd rather be freezing. At home I keep our temperature at around 68.

Living in a cold climate, I have many ideas for getting warm:

Hot drinks (especially with caffeine - coffee makes me sweat)
layers...undershirt, shirt, vest, sweater
Getting up and doing something - if I"m cold, just doing housework for 20 minutes will warm me right up.
Heating pad or hot water bottle on the cold parts of your body (hands/feet)
Thick fleece socks...keeping my feet warm seems to warm up the rest of the body and fleece socks are about the warmest socks ever.
Polyester Fleece everything. Warmest fabric ever.

HTH!

That particular day I had stayed home from work because of a migraine, so I mostly laid on the sofa. But when I have been up and moving about, I find that I'm not as cold.

My hands and feet do get terribly cold. Always have, even in Texas.

The old furnace is chugging along, but I have 3 electric radiators going near the rooms w/pipes. First time in years I am afraid of pipes bursting. My kitty and I are next to the radiator. She is comfy, I am OK for now. Extra clothes and blanket tonight.

Crazy winter.
