The DU Lounge
Related: Culture Forums, Support ForumsMy nephew was born tonight via emergency c-section at 34 weeks.
We may not actually share ties of blood -- but his father and I grew up together, his grandmother was a "second mother" to both my sister and I, and when Riley's grandmother died my "brothers" asked me to officiate her memorial (first official act as Pagan clergy, was the hardest thing I had ever done but her sister, my "Aunt", hugging me after saying that I did exactly the type of service my "mom" would have wanted made it worth it.). So little Riley is my nephew as far as I am concerned.
My brother-in-soul's lady is amazingly tough, and fortunately she had a doctor's visit today. She had been having real contractions, but didn't even register them as "Braxton-Hicks", but as simply Riley kicking! They got her in for a direct emergency transport from the doctor's office, put her on real monitoring equipment and oxygen hoping to delay things.... and it wasn't very long after that the heartbeat dropped and it was time for the OR.
So my nephew is breathing, with assistance... he's not quite 5 lbs but over 4, 15 inches long, and while his lungs weren't quite yet ready, our friends circle has seen far more premature little ones survive and thrive.
Any thoughts, prayers, candles, evergy, vibes, whatever, would be appreciated for Riley and his parents. Thanks all.

(149,705 posts)I sure hope he will be OK....He should be. Modern technology being what it is, he has very good odds for a long, healthy and productive life!

(8,311 posts)The NICU here is really great. I'm sure he's going to be just fine once they get him through this rough patch.
I will respond more later but I really do have to run... love all my DU family!

(22,380 posts)My grandson was about that same size when he was born early. About the same week tally. He is now 15 years old, 6 feet tall, and healthy as a horse. He was in intensive for a few weeks.
My own son was born weighing 6 pounds, after almost 10 months, and is OK today and in his forties.
I smoked. That would explain this sad tale.
Chances are beyond excellent that you will all be a happy family holding a perfect baby before too long

(7,911 posts)He was in the hospital for a very long time, attached to machines to help him breathe, and tubes to feed him. He wasn't expected to survive. We were worried sick for a very long time.
He turned 42 last month and is CTO of a major technology company. Stay positive and hope for the best. Good things do happen all the time.

(8,311 posts)... they saved one of our dear friend's babies when he was born at about 23-24 weeks, had not only breathing difficulties but also patent ductus arteriosis (sp) -- had to have heart surgery early because he didn't respond to the medication to close it.
Sorry I was a minute in responding -- I'm about to hop in the shower for an MRI appointment, then off to the hospital. Hugs!

(8,311 posts)She has always "powered through" pains and discomforts, she's been working the entire pregnancy and her first day missed was yesterday.
This wasn't even a routine visit, but an ultrasound to make sure everything was okay because the gender-reveal ultrasound made them concerned he was small for gestational age.
So much went right... almost like when my dad's ex-girlfriend years ago was called in for an extra shift as a unit coordinator in the ER. She had a hemorrhagic stroke that shift, and if she had been at home, even if someone had called an ambulance immediately she would have died. If you've gotta have a stroke or go into preterm labor, doing it with doctors close by is the way to go!
