One of my favorites - "Marie Antoinette" which was directed by Sophia Coppola (much better director than actress - that's for sure).
I've always loved the story of Marie Antoinette, once Queen of France whose lifestyle was so crazy out of control that she was eventually beheaded for it. (during the french revolution). Personally I think MA was totally misunderstood but because she was Austrian born, she always was considered an outsider and many times they blamed her for saying things she never really said (Like she never said "Let them eat cake" .
I love how Coppola directed the movie - it never seemed scripted but more like I was a 'fly on the wall' during pre-french revolution times at the Palce of Versailles. You would have these scenes where she would run the camera scanning over a room of party goers and you felt that you were eavesdropping on their conversation, many times it was the people of the court putting down poor Marie Antoinette, who was pretty much blamed for not having any children for the first 5 years of marriage (turns out the king had no clue about sex and wouldn't touch her). What was really great was how Coppala blended this great soundtrack of New Wave classics with life at Versailles - when they showed Marie Antoinette and her friends doing a major shopping spree they were playing "I Want Candy" by Bow Wow Wow.
Kirsten Dunst and Jason Schwartzman (cousin of Coppola, a family tradition of using family members) were well cast as Marie Antoinette and Louis XVi. Marianne Faithful was wonderful as MA's mother, the queen of Austria (here's a bit of trivia - Marianne is half Austrian and a descendant of Austrian royality). I thought Rip Torn was masterful as King Louis XV, he played the part absolutely decadent especially with the scenes he did with Asia Argento, who was wonderful as the quite tacky Madame Du Barry, mistress to King Louis XV. Coppal really managed to showcase the extreme cold wall between du Barry and Marie Antoinette - MA couldn't stand her but since she wasn't producing any heirs had to try and show some niceness to her since she was the King's favorite.
So I strongly recommend this movie, it was well done and definately a favorite of mine!

(95,337 posts)Again the movie seemed less scripted and more like you're a 'Fly on the wall' observing what happens. That's the movie where Stephen Dorff plays this hollywood star who lives at the Chateau Marmont in Hollywood and his ex-wife unloads their kid on him while she goes and 'finds herself'. It was also very good

(95,337 posts)just a warning.
There isn't alot of blood. But if that isn't something high on your list of 'movie-must-have' then you may enjoy it! This isn't a Jennifer Lopez/Katherine Heigl RomCom type chick flick - that's for sure.

(95,337 posts)Look for Kirsten Dunst films - see if it's listed there.
The movie only came out a few years ago so I doubt they would have stopped showing it.

(12,272 posts)I am shocked I tell you. Maybe Netflix rotates what is streaming, but not to have it on disc is so surprising.
