I have to say I enjoyed it very much. Not the best super hero movie ever but definitely the best from DC. All three leads were great but Wonder Woman (Gal Gadot) stole it so much that my non-comic fan wants to see her movie next year. Ben Affleck and Jeremy Irons left me wanting a solo Batman film. But I would caution you to watch Man of Steel first or you might bscratch your at times. Ignore the critics and just go.

(56,829 posts)I had low expectations for the movie. I thought it was better than I expected, though I do think Batman's reasoning to kill Superman was a bit contrived, and the reason he stopped was rather abrupt/sudden.
Agree - Gadot was good in her role. The only thing I would have liked to have seen from Affleck was maybe a few battle scars on his face - he was almost too good looking for somebody that was The Batman for 20 years. Not one scar? Only some grey hairs and some stubble.
One question, though. spoilers to the right: she was clearly able to hurt Doomsday with her sword, even slicing off its arm. Yet, the kryptonite spear was the only thing that could hurt it?

(8,217 posts)Ben Affleck did well for his role, I just think that they did a few things that are unforgivable in regards to Batman for me. Not Affleck's fault, but I consider it the fault of the story itself.
The actors were not the problem.
As for your question, highlight to the right: The Kryptonite spear was the only thing working that was permanent. Wonder Woman's sword was able to slice Doomsday, but he grew it back within the minute or less.

(7,570 posts)It may very well be the last superhero genre movie I ever see. I admit that I had low expectations going in, though.

(59,224 posts)It did seem geared to comic fans like myself who both saw Man of Steel and is familiar with the ongoing love/hate relationship between Batman and Superman (a lot of things were picked from "Batman: The Dark Knight Returns which was published in the 80's). Marvel tend to make each movie friendly to people who haven't seen the other movies. But still, if you likes Captain America and Avengers movies, you'll mostly likely enjoy 'Civil War'.

(7,570 posts)Going back long before the Frank Miller period. And although I enjoyed the Dark Knight Returns as much as anyone else when it came out, I can't say appreciate the effect it's had on the character ever since. Batman went from being a brilliant Renaissance man, truly "The Darknight Detective", to being just a dumb high-tech thug. I have no interest in following the adventures of a rich gorilla who travels around at night in fancy machines, but it seems I'm in the minority.
FWIW, I thought Affleck did a good job. It's not his fault that Batman sucks.

(8,217 posts)This is a smart yet dumbest iteration of Batman that I have seen.
Highlight below as to some unforgivable things done:
-Bruce Wayne Batman using guns to kill
-The Great Detective being manipulated in such a manner. This should not happen. Batman is the manipulator, not manipulated in this pathetic way.

(7,570 posts)And branding people? WTF?!!
I think Warner Brothers needs to pull both Batman and Superman from their movies and seriously look into what made those characters iconic, over decades, in the first place. And no, it's not because Batman kicks a lot of ass and Superman is really strong. Everyone around the world knows who Batman is. No one but a Marvel fan knows or really cares who the Punisher is. And yet, here's DC turning Batman into the Punisher.
I wish Warner could turn the franchise over to the creative people who made the animated Batman and Superman series for TV. They're still around, and they seemed to "get it" when it came to these characters. This movie looked and felt like it was put together by a committee of studio executives who care nothing about anything but the opening box office.

(8,217 posts)I mean, the movie isn't bad... I just found those aspects of the Batman in that movie unforgivable.
Not in any way Ben Affleck's fault, just the way the Batman is written in this movie.
The Second Stone
(2,900 posts)As one critic put it, it seemed a lot like an advertising trailer for future movies that lasted 2 hours. That being said, it was action packed with great visuals. The story was weak. The acting was good and the filming was good.
I saw the 3D IMAX. I would not go 3D if I saw it again as it was underlit in 3D.

The Second Stone
(2,900 posts)or at least a lot further back than you are used to. I found that eliminates the headache problem. I postulate that closer to the screen the images appear further apart because they are bigger.
I tried this first with Avatar, and it worked quite well. That was one of two movies I thought had to be seen in 3D (of those 3D that I tried). The other being Drive Angry, which benefited greatly from 3D, but otherwise was forgettable.

(7,570 posts)That's the DC style these days. Dark, muddy, and "gritty". I can't imagine it would even show up in 3D.

(41,861 posts)I am watching; Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D, Daredevil, Gotham, DC's Legends of Tomorrow, Arrow, The Flash, and have finished watching Agent Carter, and Jessica Jones. I am looking forward to Luke Cage's new show. Supergirl I always watch, its my favorite, but damn!!! Daredevil second season so far is awesome and so is Agents of Shield.

(59,224 posts)I suspect I'm a bit older than you and remember collecting comics in the 70's and 80's. But tv was limited to the 60's Batman show, a really old Spiderman cartoon and the old Hulk and Wonder Woman shows on CBS. I think that's why it's hard for me to even be down on BvS.

(63,224 posts)It was ages ago, but I recall it to have been a fairly honest treatment.
I thought that the first film wasn't bad, and it had moments that were very faithful to Alan Moore's run on the comic book, but the second film was awful. It's like they decided to go for campiness, failed, and ended up producing something wholly unwatchable.

(4,261 posts)I don't think it's been out here in Oz that I know of. Must hunt it down. I saw some of the campy film. Didn't know there was another. How could all this pass me by? to Imdb I go...

(53,987 posts)However, it wasn't the best. Jesse Eisnberg as Lex Luthor was piss-poor casting. He played Luthor as if he were the Joker. I was not happy. Affleck was better than I thought he would be, but then again, Batman was supposed to be an asshole and Affleck is one; so it worked. Cavil, well, he is just nice to look at and he actually makes a really good Superman. But, the real star was far and away, Gal Gadot...WONDER WOMAN! I managed not to scream like a 4yo child when she came on screen, but I did hit my husband and when she was in action, I almost jumped out of my seat!
I saw it in 2D because 3-D gives me migraines. Since I live in a small town, there were only a few people in the theatre, but we did have one butthead who kept pulling out his phone to text and his kid kept talking. I can deal with a kid talking up to a point, but the dad didn't encourage him to whisper and the dad didn't even whisper. There were also three old men; bless their hearts, two of them fell asleep and started snoring! LOL! They left half through the movie.
I love all the superhero TV shows. Love Daredevil on Netflix. But DC is doing much better on the small screen so far.

(8,217 posts)The weakness of the movie is not the actors. It is the contrived storyline that could have been done much better.
The actors did well, and they made the most out of a bad story.
Few things:
Superman - He's not bad.
-Henry Cavill looks great as the Man of Steel. I think his best work however is if he does not say anything.
-Also not the nicest Superman, and his Clark Kent is someone I am surprised hasn't been fired from his job.
Batman/Bruce Wayne - Decent Batman but...
-Batman does not kill, especially not with guns, this one had a pretty big body count.
-Batman is the great detective. Not so great in this one, to the point of utter carelessness.
Alfred - Always awesome
-Jeremy Irons is a great Alfred.
Wonder Woman/Diana Prince - She did well
-I may still prefer another Wonder Woman, but I have no idea how they are doing the Wonder Woman in this particular world, so I am good with her.
Lex Luthor - Ugh... No... Just No.
-Whiny crazy jittery Lex is not my cup of tea.
-Him knowing what he knows so that he could pull what he did is just... No, can't agree with it at all. Highlight below for reason:
Luthor should not know who Batman or Superman is. Sorry, but that is also an unforgivable offense of this movie.
Hope that is not spoilerish.

(100,102 posts)I'm with Kevin Smith when he said that the film lacked humanity. Which is something that Deadpool had that Batman V. Superman does not. My take is that everything that the Nolan Batman films got right, Batman V. Superman got wrong. The Nolan Batman films took place in reality - Batman and Bruce Wayne were both real people and not cartoonish versions of real people (like the Tim Burton Batman), Gotham was a real city and almost a character itself. Harvey Dent was a real person, as was Alfred (I mean come on, how could you follow the great Michael Caine???), Catwoman, Commissioner Gordon, and Mayor Garcia. Even the villains in the movie were based in reality - Bane, the Joker, and Scarecrow - they didn't have some bizarre cartoon origin like they were raised by actual penguins. You believed in these people and wanted to see them succeed against the Joker and Bane. Batman also had a moral fiber to his being - he would never use his powers to kill people, but the Ben Affleck Batman was almost a full blown, fucking psychopath. He brands people and murders them. They nearly lost me in the opening credits when the Affleck Batman started branding people. And don't get me started about the Emo Lex Luthor either.
And the other thing that I was annoyed with is that they should have pulled what Marvel is doing and done a Batman origin story and maybe hinted at Wonder Woman's existence (like maybe during the credits or even afterward) before just having her show up out of nowhere. But incorporating the Batman origin story in a movie that is really supposed to be about Batman and Superman fighting is kind of unforgivable. If they want to do a Justice League movie, take a cue from Marvel first. Do all the origin stories and get them out of the way, then you can start combining characters. Or hinting at other ones in the universe.
