She was the apple of Daddy's eye, which I learned when I was starting my 2nd decade, so I learned what purely loving admiration was.
Later, I with my generation thought of her as a (too) goody-goody. A couple of decades later her history of being abused and that her son had been the real target for MANSON became known. Plus her loyalty to her friend Rock. In her retirement, besides her love for animals, it was touching that she wouldn't allow herself to be trotted out to pose with "honorary" Oscars. But I was really disappointed to hear LIMBOsevic brag on the radio that she is a fan of his who modestly won't call him directly but called his mother when he wasn't around. Lots of changes -- who, her or me?!1
Oh, and another thing. In looking for pics that could be Pasted here, I looked at between 50 to 100 and of all of those, there were only about a half dozen without that brilliant smile.

Doris Day Speaks Out on Her 92nd Birthday: 'Age Is Just a Number'
.... Born Doris Kappelhoff in Cincinnati to music teacher William and homemaker Alma, Day first began singing on the radio and broke through with her big-band hit "Sentimental Journey" and quickly shot to stardom.
After going solo in 1947, she successfully auditioned for Warner Bros. and was cast in a handful of romantic musicals, including Romance on the High Seas.
In 1956, she starred in Alfred Hitchcock's film The Man Who Knew Too Much, in which she recorded the Oscar-winning song, "Que Sera, Sera."
In 1959 she starred alongside Rock Hudson in Pillow Talk, which earned her a Best Actress Oscar nomination, and marked the beginning of a close friendship with her co-star. ....
On Saturday, the DDAF hosted a 92nd birthday party and fundraiser in her honor. "The Doris Day Animal Foundation team is putting on another big celebration," she told PEOPLE in her statement. " And I am so grateful and honored that fans and friends come from all over the world to help support the precious four-leggers."

(53,410 posts)And when she stood by Rock Hudson to change the world about the attitude of disregard for AIDS that day I was very proud of her. In a symbolic way she stuck her thumb in Reagan's eye for not 'seeing' the importance of this devastating illness.
She was always a lady through and through, and her voice was one of the most soothing and lovely sounds in the world.

(66,434 posts)Most tankers at that time either listened to heavy metal or country music. (I listened to everything but country...) But he was an unabashed fan of Doris Day. We'd be on a road march somewhere, and he'd be in the gunner's seat singing Que Sera, Sera. He knew no one would tease him about it. He was an ass-kicker...

(22,898 posts)I excuse her being a repuke for that reason.
And, yes, a vanishing species.

(14,691 posts)yukky, yes, but NORMAL. She must fit into that category - except for her listening to Limbaugh.
Happy B.D. Doris.

(22,898 posts)I read recently that Mary Tyler Moore is also a member of that party-- I was surprised.
I had always considered her a progressive.

(8,063 posts)very, very different. I actually own the DVD's of Pillow Talk, Lover come Back, and Send Me No Flowers. Those were my favorite movies of her with Rock. They had so much chemistry onscreen. And, what she's done for our furry friends is wonderful!

(21,046 posts)Yeah I know it's tacky, but Oscar Levant was a great piano player and one of the great smart asses of history.
And if Doris Day is a sensible Republican (I thought they were extinct) and an animal lover, I have no problem with that.
She looks really good. If she's had any plastic surgery it must have been pretty subtle.
I've seen women on TV that look like their face got pulled back so tightly that their ears might flap together in the back (like Scully in the new X-Files, my guess).
