broke her jaw. Her cat ran out in front of her and tripped her. She fell over and her teeth went right through her bottom lip. Her teeth are out of alignment and she needs surgery. She's going to have to come and stay with my family for some time starting tomorrow. I've been worrying about her. She's very thin and she smokes. Keep us in your thoughts.

(34,136 posts)Treatments today are very good and can make a huge difference in bone brittleness.
"She's very thin and she smokes." is what throws up a big red flag for me but any person over 60 should consider getting tested.
You are a good person to take care of her. Best wishes for you and for your aunt.

(872 posts)She is very lucky to have you folks, a lot of older people have no one.
Falling is a big problem for older people. Slower reflexes, lack of good balance. A doctor or physical therapist can help her work on some balance exercises.
I would be careful of osteoporosis medications. They can still cause jaw death, as far as I know.
Fatten her up. Not eating properly is also an easy thing for older people to do.. It just gets to be too much trouble to prepare meals. When she is back in her own home, look into meals on wheels for her. That will also be a way for her to be checked on in terms on someone knowing if she is okay.
Who is taking care of her cat?

(4,532 posts)She's looking into sticking with the patches they gave her. Maybe there is a silver lining here.

(53,410 posts)Having her head down in a prone position might end up being too painful. And it will be hard for her to sit up and stand from a completely prone position.
I took care of my bed ridden mother for five years so I recommend the following
Because of her being thin and having her bones very close to the surface make sure she has plenty of soft padding under her to relieve the pressure points which is where the bones are pressing on the mattress. And since it will sometimes be hard on her to go to the bathroom quickly enough be sure to put large waterproof pads under her. If you get the cloth ones they will last for years and years and look like new. In order to get her to eat as much as possible give her all her favorite foods. And give her things that have plenty of calories right off the bat. Ice cream is good. Yogurt. high protein shakes. Fruit smoothies. V8 fruit and vegetable juice as well as all other juices. Try to make the food so delicious that she'll want to drink it.
Good luck to you and your aunt. It's going to be tough for a little while. Give her all the pain medication the doctor allows and don't miss a dose because coming back from the pain takes a very long time. I truly feel for your aunt. It's a very bad break and surgery.
