I took him to the vet Monday, and tests were run. He has severe kidney failure, probably caused by congenital kidney issues. I'll probably be taking him back within the week for euthanasia. Poor baby.

(15,224 posts)There are simply never the rights words. I am so sorry for you and for Patrick. Thank you for loving him enough to keep his suffering to a minimum. I know it is not easy...

(19,736 posts)...because of Kidney Failure. He was old when we rescued him. I loved that dog more than any other I've ever met. Our theory is that he was a show dog who stopped winning and they just turned him loose. He was on the streets before the dog catcher picked him up and he ended up at the pound. The kid would drink from puddles, wag and dance in the rain trying to get water, and he'd eat snow. He didn't know what to do with all the love and kisses we gave him at first, but he'd go nuts and start kissing me which would make me giggle and that would just make him do it even more. I just loved our Leroy.
I'm so sorry you are going to lose your cat. I feel for you. And I know how much it sucks.
Give Patrick the cat kisses from Oklahoma. I'm sure he's the best.

(50,130 posts)There is no cure. And trying to prolong the life of a cat in kidney failure is an exercise in heartbreak because what you have to do (force feed, medicate, hydrate with a needle and fluid) is resisted by the animal, naturally.
Sad as it may be -- tragic, really -- the most loving act is to help them go. Making that decision to end the life force has always weighed heavily on me.
Love your last days together, and treasure them. I clipped a bit of fur from my cat to keep in a little box. I buried him with a clip of my own hair and wrapped in the scrap of soft flannel that he loved to sleep with.
Make some sweetness happen in these last days. Tell him we all love him too, and wish peace for him.

(12,704 posts)comfort you at such a sad time.
Take me to the bridge
Where the fresh clear waters flow
Take me to the sunshine
Show me the virgin snow
Take me to a new place
Where I can feel no pain
My body be renewed, reborn
My spirit whole again
You have loved me endlessly
And I have loved you so
You gave me more than I could ask
It breaks my heart to go
But it's time for me to leave your side
Time for my spirit to soar
For this moment I have waited all my life
Freedom for evermore
Please don't be sad, don't weep for me
I have found so many friends
Take comfort in my angel's wings
May they help your broken heart mend
I love you so, I always have
You know I always will
I miss you too, our life, our love
But I'll be waiting still
I'll be here when you come to join me
I'll wait through all the years
But please don't rush... take time, enjoy,
Don't live your life in tears.
I thank you from my furry soul
for what you have done for me
You helped me cross an ancient bridge
And I made it across safely.
I was welcomed by so many friends
Who knew my name and yours
They'd heard us mentioned in so many prayers
And ran to meet me at the door.
I want to tell you of these new wonders
But I don't want to spoil the surprise
So go in peace, in love, and in warmth,
Till we see each others eyes.

The Last Battle
If it should be that I grow frail and weak
And pain should keep me from my sleep,
Then will you do what must be done,
For this -- the last battle -- can't be won.
You will be sad I understand,
But don't let grief then stay your hand,
For on this day, more than the rest,
Your love and friendship must stand the test.
We have had so many happy years,
You wouldn't want me to suffer so.
When the time comes, please, let me go.
Take me to where to my needs they'll tend,
Only, stay with me till the end
And hold me firm and speak to me
Until my eyes no longer see.
I know in time you will agree
It is a kindness you do to me.
Although my tail its last has waved,
From pain and suffering I have been saved.
Don't grieve that it must be you
Who has to decide this thing to do;
We've been so close -- we two -- these years,
Don't let your heart hold any tears.
