But I'm forcing myself to eat these things everyday in my daily garden salad.
I think I'd rather eat something I cleaned out of my cat's litter box.
yuck!
But in order to eat healthier I'm forcing this stuff in me. Usually with the help of a touch of dressing and alot of water I get it down me. Also I have to make the salad myself - no salad bar. That way I know the produce is fresh, it's organic and it's locally grown if possible.

(102,408 posts)I like all those things... There are relatively few veggies I won't eat as long as they aren't overcooked and some veggies, I just can't eat canned (peas).
But, good on you for giving it a try. I have my seasonal staples and am about to move into the daily "salad" as meal phase again, myself. The only good thing about really hot summer temps approaching is that I can rely on salads, cold soups and really good smoothies to sustain me! I eat really really healthy in spring/summer. Maybe that makes up for the meat-infused stews and other comfort foods all winter long? LOL

(47,675 posts)I'll send you a care package this summer with some choice yummies from our garden. Are you EVER going to get back to this area?
Oh, my wife's a DU member, so don't mention that time we (CENSORED CENSORED CENSORED CENSORED) by the (CENSORED CENSORED) and freaked out the seniors at the Sonic when we (CENSORED CENSORED CENSORED CENSORED CENSORED), okay?

(8,747 posts)What do you LIKE in a salad???
Next to lettuce, those four thing MAKE a salad. Hell they make a perfect meal. As far as I'm concerned, a salad without tomatoes is not a salad. And it's too damn bad so few salad bars have radishes.

(95,337 posts)Else I'm never going to get healthy.
I just need to somehow get that stuff from the salad bowl and into my tummy where it can help me be a healthier person. If only I could bypass my tastebuds that tell my brain "YUCKY". I have very sensitive taste buds.

(12,272 posts)Romaine lettuce has a longer shelf-life than most other lettuces and a higher nutrient content. Plus, markets around here carry at least two kinds that are organic and at a reasonable price. I make my own dressing and add garlic bread croutons, hey if you don't like it it is too easy to give up on it. Good luck on getting healthy.

(95,337 posts)I'm just trying to get more variety of veggies inside of me.

(12,272 posts)And add a good multiple vitamin/antioxidant to your diet. Seriously, making yourself eat food you don't like is a waste of good willpower/discipline.
I also agree completely with you on the juicing, even if the clean-up were easier, the wastefulness just got to me. I tried making muffins from the pulp for a while and sent them with my husband to work and that worked, but it just wasn't worth sustaining.
LynneSin
(95,337 posts)I can't imagine muffins made with the pulp
I'm fine with the salad thing. It's something I need to do and I do find that the more I force myself to eat a food the more my taste buds will start to get use to it. Plus if I just put a tiny tip of dress on the part that hits the tongue first the rest I can get down with no problems.
I use to hate romaine lettuce but forced myself to eat it and now I do enjoy it so it is possible!

(12,272 posts)The muffins were wonderful, he would tell me people asked when he would bring them in again. They had sort of the texture of carrot cake.
OK, now that you tell me that you are teaching yourself to like the vegetables, I can understand.

(53,410 posts)I can try it with all the stuff I hate eating. Liver, turnips and beets!
LynneSin
(95,337 posts)Especially with someone like me who can drink just about anything in liquid form as long as it's room temperature (and not poisonous). I actually went thru a juicing phase and I would just put all sorts of fruits & veggies in there and some of the combos sound just hideious. But for me I could chug it in less than 5 seconds so I never really tasted it.
Sounds like a dream come true?
Not really....
First, some of the best part of the fruit and/or veggies never make it into the glass and that's the pulp that gets left behind in the blender. THat pulp has alot of fiber and nutrients in it that end up getting tossed. Problem for me, I would try to put some of the pulp in but also in it are seeds (which you don't want) and the more pulp the hard it was for me to chug.
This leads to the next issues which is waste - you have to juice alot of stuff to get even just a 4oz glass of beverage and it seemed like alot of waste.
Biggest issue was just the mess and juicing is very messy. To clean up the juicer I"d spend about 20-30 minutes scrubbing the parts to get all the bits of waste off of it. It would take alot of water sometimes to get that stuff out of the machine.
So as much as juicing could work on paper it's just a big hassle.

(27,677 posts)How about making a stir fry or (lightly) steaming them?

(95,337 posts)I also don't like anything that isn't a veggie, a crouton, bacon bits or chicken that is in my salad.
I had a coworker that would go to the salad bar at work and just pile everything onto her plate including beets, cottage cheese, macaroni salad, blah blah blah and just eat it all as one food source. Yuckie!

(4,056 posts)All that stuff you mentioned is stuff I love. I live on raw salads, but I doubt I could eat them without an amazing dressing. I make one with Dijon mustard, silken tofu, garlic, balsamic, and parmesan cheese. Throw it all in a blender, and it's creamy and delish with those crunchy veggies. Also, stir-fry is nothing without a spicy marinade. And fruit salad requires Greek yogurt and a handful if raw, mixed nuts.
Seriously I've eaten this way for years, and I never get tired of it.

(32,095 posts)Toss it with some olive oil, sprinkle on some salt and pepper, and roast at 425-450F until it's tender. You can add some garlic, too. And, once it's done, a squirt of lemon juice is nice, and even nicer on cold roasted broccoli, especially if garlic is involved.
eta: Cold roasted or steamed broccoli is pretty good in a salad. I recommend an Asian sesame ginger dressing or an Italian/Caesar dressing. Newman's Own makes good versions of these
