I have decided not to keep my car. It costs too much to insure, register, inspect, keep up, etc. I postponed making this decision because I was hoping my financial situation would turn around but it hasn't turned around in time for me to make upcoming registration, insurance, and inspection costs.
Has anyone here donated a car to charity? What charity do you recommend? I started some online research and see there are a lot of scams out there. I just want to make sure the benefit of the car or its proceeds are used for a good purpose.

(20,924 posts)I donated mine to Big Brothers, Big Sisters. As long as the charity itself isn't a scam then the donation process shouldn't be either, if you contact them directly.
The way it worked when I did it was I contacted the BB/BS organization and they took down some information, including when they could come pick up the car. I cleaned it out of any personal effects and paperwork. My car was towed off at no cost to me, sold at auction, and the proceeds went to my charity. Very clean and simple. They later sent me a statement showing how much it sold far. A nice tax deduction, and your donation helps raise money for an organization you support.
Good luck, and good choice!
