East Ohio Gas Company Fire 1944



October 1944. A 50 block section of Cleveland caught fire as liquid gas storage tanks of the East Ohio Gas Company exploded. Gas mains ignited and manhole covers blew off. Drivers were trapped in the fire and they abandoned their cars, jumping into Lake Erie. 155 people died. 3600 homes were destroyed.
