Thomas Stevens and His Penny Farthing

At 8 am on April 22, 1884, Thomas Stevens rode his bike, a 50" Penny Farthing, from San Francisco to Boston. The 3700 mile trip took four months to complete. He also cycled across Europe and through Turkey to Calcutta; then he cycled across Japan. He pedaled, in all, about 13,500 miles and was the first to be credited with circumnavigating the globe by bicycle.
