The DU Lounge
Related: Culture Forums, Support ForumsJust checked out a list of "what's new on NetFlix" for June
Of the 78 entries listed, I would say that 2 (or maybe 2.5) of them are of any interest at all.
You'd think that they'd stumble upon something worth watching simply by random chance, but no. How can this esteemed streaming service choose so much uninteresting crap without accidentally landing an interesting film.
But apparently their algorithm is optimized for (and incredibly good at) picking programming that makes me wonder why I maintain the service, and they somehow manage to keep doing it month after month. Amazing!
I'd be willing to pay an extra couple of bucks each month if it meant getting an occasional new release that isn't an Adam Sandler film, for instance.

(28,394 posts)At least three Disney classics, including Mulan. I guess there are other ways to view Disney movies nowadays.

(1,532 posts)So many sites/channels are moving to online streaming it makes me wonder if the available inventory is drying up.

(63,224 posts)Why can't we search by performer name, director name, year of release, etc? And why do we only get two pages of search results?
Sure, we can use InstantWatcher, but it would be nice to have that feature enabled within the NetFlix search function itself.
Seems like I remember being able to search by actor long ago.

(26,337 posts)... shitty on purpose.
It's like one of those rip-off crane games at the carnival. It you just try a little bit harder, you might pull some worthwhile shit out. But it's really mostly shit. And the claws are dull and slippery.
The OP even touches on it.

That's the point.
I suspect they know they are at the limit of what people will pay for shit programming.
I mean, really, how long is Sharknado, Snow Piercer, Turbo Kid, and Monsters going to stay on the "new release" sci fi list?

(7,336 posts)I spent hours playing around with it. You have to be logged in to your Netflix account so that the links work in your account.
The obscurity of some of the categories though! LOL. The list is entertaining by itself.

(16,386 posts)They used to have some excellent productions with great writing. Now, not so much.

(45,528 posts)and they have new seasons of lots of popular series like peaky blinders, hell on wheels, anthony bourdain, etc. And some of their comedy shows are good. I enjoyed Ali Wong: Baby Cobra.
Their movies on instant have been disappointing for quite some time now. But the biggest disappointment is why they don't have more in their DVD/Blu-Ray section. There are many good movies that I have saved for years now with no sign of it ever coming available.
Have you checked out Amazon?

(63,224 posts)Yes, I'd seen every episode 100 times already, but it was nice to be able to watch the original cuts without commercials.

(2,872 posts)probably will make the full walk if they get rid of Trainspotting, any of the Tarantinos, or any of the Kubricks.
