Very odd interaction at the liquor store

Yesterday I went to the liquor store to pick up some beer.

As I was heading toward the entrance there was also a guy heading there and I beat him to the door.

So I opened the door and held it and he looked at me and said, "Go ahead" so I handed off the door and went inside.

Once inside he said to me, "You weren't going to hold the door for me were you?" And I said "Yes, actually I was." He then said,
" I couldn't have come in the door if you were holding it for me."

My reaction (in my head) was WTF? I don't look elderly, did he think I was incapable of holding the door?

When I got home I told my husband and my son and his GF and they all agreed the guy was a sexist and thought he was ridiculous.

If only I knew he couldn't go in if I held the door I could have stood there all day holding it and just looking at him.

1. That's funny. I've had similar experiences, but I never had anyone call me on it.

Full disclosure, at nearly 70, I suppose I do look elderly with this face full of wrinkles, but I definitely do not look infirm or incapable of holding a door.

person at the door holds it. Funny that you've had similar experiences. Can't wait for my next door challenge.

...I like holding the door for others and saying you're welcome to their thank you. Generally this is more difficult if the door opens toward you and the first person to arrive approaches from the jamb side rather than the hinged side. It's easier to hold a door standing behind it than it is to reach though the doorway to the other side.

going in. I always hold doors if I am the first person there and don't discriminate towards men.

For example, I approach an entrance/exit from the right of a door that opens towards me (I need to pull the door to open).

The door swings open to my left (the hinge is on the left side of the door).

As I open the door, a second person reaches the door a bit after me but he approaches from the left.

If he conveniently reaches for the door, I can simply hold it long enough for him to take hold. If he just looks at me and/or the door, I'm left pondering what to do. It seems ridiculous to excuse myself by him in order to continue holding the door and my arm isn't long enough for me to comfortably hold it open from the right while he walks under my through the door.

Hope this helps.
