I have a very old gateway. Don't hate. And it is time for a new one. It makes me sad to have to give this up but it is showing signs of illness. Super slow, freezes. I am slow to get a new one partly because I just don't want to deal with windows 10. I like my windows 7. I have had a few people warn me against HP laptops. Apparently, they are just garbage?
I use my laptop for very basic things (shopping, email, facebook). I never use it for any gaming or movies or anything like that. I am not picky. Something basic, reliable, and affordable. Any suggestions?
UPDATE: Hi everyone. Wanted to update on the laptop I got. I ended up going with an Acer Aspire E 15.6" Laptop with Intel Core i3-5005U Processor 2Ghz, 4GB DDR3L SDRAM, 500GB Hard Drive for $287 from Fry's electronics. I think Newegg had a better deal but I just went with Fry's because, quite honestly, it was late, I got too tired looking at computers and just snapped. I just wanted to be done so Fry's it was. LOL Plus I wanted a brick and mortar place to deal with if something goes wrong.
Thanks for everyone's input.

(130,972 posts)but 'old' model. I particularly like the keyboard.
I DON'T like Lenovo; tried a couple.
Have fun!

(29,322 posts)I think they're reelatively cheap.
I had a Toshiba laptop which ended up loaded with rookit viruses that took complete control, don't know if Asus has better protections against that but never had issues.

(20,202 posts)I bought it used and I've had it for 7 years. I replaced it with another Dell Latitude refurb because I needed a newer OS to run some accounting software. I recommend the Latitude line over the Inspirion. It's their business class laptop. I think they are more durable.

(43,049 posts)that also works fine. I did not pay extra for a touchscreen on mine-- that's on the work computer, and I hardly ever use it. But, it you get a good enough deal, go for it.
The work Dell was POS, but that was a while ago, and my personal Lenovo had weird problems, but I did abuse it. It's now linux machine.
HP printers I have problem with-- they seem to break a lot, but not the three HP computers I presently own.
Don't worry about Win10. It might take a wee little bit to get used to at first, but you can set it up to look pretty much like your old Win 7 and you'll never know the difference. And it will be safer and faster, and you'll get a lot more done with it. I've three W10 computers with no problems and I'm still finding out new good stuff about it.

(7,963 posts)I don't print that much anymore but when I did for school, it was PERFECT. Saved me a lot of money. Sometimes (rarely, actually) I miss the color printing. For the most part, the b/w fits my printing needs. I really do love it.
Good to know about win10. I saw the new look and there was just no way I was going there. It confused me too much. Thanks for the input!!

(43,049 posts)went out and got another one for around 60 bucks and it's still here. Prints like a champ and the cartridges are cheap. No wi-fi, but who cares-- USB cables are cheap. Bet it's the same one you got-- HL-2240, or similar
I also have an Epson printer/scanner/fax with the large bed and two paper drawers. Got it on sale and it works great, but the Brother is the day-to-day printer.
The big HP printer I had just crapped out-- it printed OK most of the time but the paper delivery mechanism wore out in no time at all. Cheapest of cheap manufacturing.

(17,305 posts)They all served me well, although two of them had the battery prematurely wear down but I chose to surf while plugged in for the last year or two of their lifespan instead of replacing batteries. Everything else was great, however.
Then I foolishly thought the grass might be greener. My sister had a Lenovo and loved it so I got one last year after my last Toshiba was grinding to a halt. Nothing but problems with the Lenovo. The biggest issue, which became apparent shortly after I took it out of the box, was that the touchpad was wonky. It jumped all over the place when it was responsive at all. Lenovo agreed to fix it, as they should since it was still under warranty, but told me I'd have to pay to ship it to them and then they'd ship it back for free. I fought them on it and they paid for all the shipping. The touchpad now works fine but sometimes the screen is in the wrong orientation when it boots up or "wakes up." It's a minor thing that's easily corrected, but it's annoying.
Anyway, based on this experience I will avoid Lenovo in the future.

(37,457 posts)it's refurbished, which I have had good luck with, and it's only $245 plus shipping.

(34,136 posts)We bought a touch screen laptop for my MIL to use while she was in the nursing home - HP refurbished with 17" screen for under $300. She's now in a assisted living facility and has her desktop to use so I got the new laptop. It's pretty nice even though it has Windows 10 - which I have to learn.
I also gave my husband a refurbished laptop last year from NewEgg.com. He loves it and has had no problems with it at all.
I like New Egg.com - they have good deals and you can rely on the user reviews. I've been buying parts from them for over 15 years and never had a problem.

(28,394 posts)I know they are expensive, but they are supposed to be very reliable. I had an HP before this and had so many problems with it. It was just constant aggravation.
I now have a MacBook Pro. It is what we used when I was teaching and although I was really hard on mine, it never let me down. This was my "retirement gift" to myself.

(31,392 posts)my tech son helped me pick out an Asus. I'm like you--use it for basic stuff, no gaming or movies--and he loaded it with Linux Mint because I didn't want to do Windows 10.
My youngest son just had his Lenovo die and he decided to go back to apple because his previous apple lasted twice as long as the Lenovo and he's happy not to have to
deal with Windows 10.

(26,582 posts)The previous one was just too old. Got a new one a year or so ago. Windows 10 really isn't all that bad. I have a touch screen.
I use an HP at work which is fine. I like that HP Spectre, if I was in the market. Or the Surface Pro.

(16,383 posts)Sort of a laptop/tablet hybrid. I don't use the tablet features much.

(168 posts)I'm on my Acer Chromebook typing this. Fast, no worries about viruses. Great for web browsing, watching Netflix, fantasy football. And yes inexpensive.

(23,690 posts)Had it for several years, no problems. Came with Windows 8, I have since upgraded to Win 10. No real problems. It does the job and I'm happy with it.
Google inexpensive laptops. Bunch of them. Some refurbished at Staples. But at $159 even if it doesn't last long, you'll get your monies worth.

(18,479 posts)Here are some Win7pro options.
If you're on a tight budget, I used this model Dell for a 18 months with no issues:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834296630
$152 for a refurb.
If you're okay with the price, I used this model and would definitely buy a new one:

$800 new.

(5,636 posts)Unless you want to get caught in the details, go to a Costco or store that has a variety of laptops, try the keyboards, look at the screens, check the weight, and see if it feels reasonably sturdy. Buy the one you like. I think all the major brands are fine. Sure, you can always run into the risk of getting a lemon, but that's not usually the case. You could also search for laptops on Ebay and see if they have yours with Windows 7. They might even have a new one, and it would probably be pretty cheap.

(7,963 posts)I will go and look at the laptops in the various big boxes nearby. And then look at the various laptops on newegg.com. I don't mind a refurbished so I will look into those.
