He lent that voice for the narration of Ken Burns' documentary series Baseball and The Civil War.

He was born in NYC and grew up in St. Louis. Quite a pedigree too. (Learned from Wiki.)

Thx for posting this song...brings back all sorts of memories.

His energy in the first version to the laid back bunch of old pickers in the second. Not sure which one I enjoy best but both are excellent.

I know this is an old post and no one will see it. I loved the rendition he played at Steve Goodman's memorial tribute. He was a friendly person too. At the Philadelphia Folk Festival he was walking around the camp sites and stopped and visited us for a while. We played guitars, I had a banjo that I gladly offered John, and there was a bit of weed, beer, and wine. A fine time was had by all of us that I will never forget.
