So my Brother in Law just passed away in a car accident

I'm driving out to see my sister's family right now. This man helped us with so much. He was my man of honor at my wedding.

I'm crushed and destroyed by the text message from my teenage nephew that simply reads, "I think my dad just passed"

I lost my own father suddenly to a heart attack when I was 17 and I know my nephew's sense of shock right now. You literally don't know what to think of the world when your first parent passes.

I'm still in shock myself.

When death is unexpected, there is no time to get ready, to say goodbye, to have one last conversation, one last hug.........

It is shocking and horrifying.

Please take care of yourself......

Safe passage to your brother in law...

My last conversation with him was in his antique store.

I was admiring a pipe organ he purchased at an auction.

He showed off this antique electronic baseball game that he knew I liked.

He wanted me to see if I could repair an antique jukebox for him because he knew I was good at that kind of thing.

He gave me antique electronics he found all the time because he knew I loved that stuff.

He loved me as a brother in law could.

I'm so so so grateful for everything he's given me in my life.

I know the feeling very well - a good friend of mine died very suddenly last year of a massive heart attack and it just doesn't get any easier.

This is the worst--no time to prepare, no chance to take leave, just sudden shock and no idea how to deal with it.

I wish you the best of luck in dealing with something there is no way to deal with.

I know what you mean about losing a parent. In my experience, it took a full decade...not to get over it...but for it to be OK to carry it with me. You never get over it.

Again, so sorry to hear your sad news. I'll be thinking about you today, as I'm sure everyone else here will.
