I so hate that ad where they have everybody singing "You Don't Own Me".

The Leslie Gore version was an early assertion of female independence. To have a sequence where EVERYBODY sings it(including rich white dudes) completely defeats the purpose.

It's pretty much the same thing as pissing on Leslie's grave.

It makes no sense whatsoever, considering the ad is about a car. LisaL Oct 2016 #2

Another great song completely misunderstood by the advertising industry. I've given up hoping things will get better. My only question is: How bad will it get before it just becomes worthless...?? Will American companies keep throwing money at an illiterate industry?

Remember that super-bowl ad that featured that strange creature (monkey-puppy-baby) if I remember correctly; they knew that any advertisement that had either, a monkey or a puppy or a baby was generally successful....so the only thing they could think of to push another 'sports drink' was, in their mind, a combination of those 3 items.

There is another car ad running these days that looks like a farmer has taken a litter of puppies 'out to the dugout' for a cull, only to have them escape that fate and run home to the farm. The car they're selling is shown high-ballin' it out of there through a muddy ditch.

I had hoped that another season of Mad Men would have illuminated the point in advertising when it went from selling the product to selling the consumer.

Thanks for remembering Lesley Gore. She woke us all up with that song.

Videos of puppies, monkeys, and babies are all big hits(I'd have gone with "KittyMonkeyBaby" myself), so the idea was that if you combined three(through some unspeakable genetic lab breakthrough, I'm guessing), you'd have something irresistible. The scariest thing about THAT ad was the part at the end in which the three dudes who'd been visited by this hideous mutant found themselves following its orders to dance.

In real life, that would probably be a sign of the approach of the End Times.
