Now it's 'flavored' Martinis.

(20,176 posts)Sorry Gophers fan. Whoever wins that game should win the final, the two best teams in the frozen-4 are playing in that semi-final.

(78,249 posts)Does not compute.
To my knowledge there is only one college hockey team in the entire South, Alabama-Huntsville.

(20,176 posts)all the way down to VTech. Mostly D-II hockey schools. The local rivalry between American and Catholic may be the most-brutal in college hockey. It's bad when the teams have to break-up fights in the stands and the police maintain a barricade between the cheering sections. Edit: The referees have taken to wearing full-pads too.
The entire Mid-Atlantic South: MD, VA, WV, NC is a huge college-draw for kids from PA, NY, DE, NJ and S. CT. (All youth hockey hotbeds.) Close enough they can go home within a couple hours, far enough that you don't have to deal with helicopter parents.
But yeah. I see your point. I don't think there are too many south of here.

(12,296 posts)I would LOVE to see Lil Old UNION with 0 NHL draft picks pull it off.
That said, in all the games I saw on BigTen Network this season The Gophers looked tough.
So I think it's theirs for the taking.
HOCKEY!!!!!

(12,296 posts)... and the game they played against Michigan State was incredible. Their next step over Lowell was a pretty good game, too.
It's really interesting to see the different styles of flow & play of the Eastern teams vs. the WCHA/CCHA teams' styles.

(24,931 posts)I went to school in upstate NY and our lacrosse and football teams always played them.

(17,087 posts)In the year of the little guy, the smallest of them all has punched its ticket to the Frozen Four.
Little Union College, with an enrollment of right around 2,200 and no scholarships for their student-athletes, came out of the East Regional on top with a 4-2 victory over another upstart club, Massachusetts-Lowell, in front of 5,328 at the Webster Bank Arena on Saturday.

I can't imagine a bigger underdog!

(24,931 posts)They sure have a lot of Minnesotans and Candadians on their team.
If Minnesota loses to BC, I'll be rooting for Union.

(17,087 posts)They took out Maine in the second round, so by the Transitive Law of Sports Rooting I should be rooting for them, but I just can't.

(1,555 posts)I'd never heard of them until they beat my University of Denver Pioneers a couple of weeks back. I do hope that the Gophers send BC packing...not a BC fan at all.
