They are overlapping, but somewhat different musical styles.

I'd say the difference is that hip hop is more about the beat and the overall vibe, with the lyrics being somewhat of an afterthought. Nonsense rhymes, hype lyrics (put your hands in the air!), and such. Party music, basically.

Rap is more introspective, and focused on the lyrics.

It seems like both are more about the percussion and the words. Poetry to a drumbeat.

As opposed to music, which has melody and chords.

But I guess my old age is showing.
