Out of the Blue . . .
This being the ultimate AOTD post, this album is doubly fitting. It can be appreciated on its own, and that right well. But the more one knows of Neil Young and his own musical biography, and the times when this 1979 album came out, the more it can be appreciated. This album is crafted. Recorded live at the Cow Palace in San Francisco (mostly), Side 1 is acoustic and Side 2 is electric. Despite the importation of a couple of songs (Sail Away and Pocahontas) from other sessions, the album hangs together quite well.
The songs themselves challenge the listener and require multiple listenings to plumb the depths not only of the musical artistry but Young's lyrics, which here are as cunningly simple yet complex as any in his long career. Young bookends the album with two versions of the same song and lyrics, juggling the music and the words to pull even more meaning out of his work. You can drink a bottle of Budweiser, but a glass of Terminator Stout (or your favorite microbrew) is meant to be savored. This is an album that should be savored.

(82,849 posts)To leave that brick by the back window so Lynne and I could get into your place and rifle through your albums.
