The Little Fork Volunteer Fire Dept. Technical Large Animal Rescue Team experienced a memorable Memorial Day when it was called out of town to help its first camel.
The team received the call after 1 p.m. May 31 that Newt, a 15-year-old Bactrian camel, had fallen in his stall days earlier and still couldnt get up. A veterinarian and its owners had tried everything to no avail. The worry was that if Newt remained down for another night that it would damage his legs.
So the local volunteers with Little Fork, headquartered in Rixeyville, started toward the camels home in the Nokesville area of Prince William County. ... While en route our crew began research on camel characteristics and defense mechanisms. This was our first camel incident," Little Fork Chief Doug Monaco said.
....
We stopped and rearranged the wide straps to pull him back onto the glide which is now Plan C. All crews began pulling the straps and Newt began to slide forward back onto the glide. It was at this time that Newt initiated Plan D (on his own) deciding to help by raising up with his rear legs, standing up and walking away, Monaco said. ... When we last saw Newt he was chewing on some carrots while being given a bath in a wash stall by his owners, Monaco said.
