I've been doing NY Times puzzles for over 40 years and can't remember ever seeing that.

Be able to figure out the meaning of sth? It might be "mash", but that would make a good word bad.

Still the meaning of "sth" is my primary concern. That hint might reappear.

Hit something = mash.

Not a great clue really, usually if a word is abbreviated in a puzzle clue, the answer is also abbreviated. Glad you are getting into crossword puzzles
