Yesterday, there was a coworker of mine, known to be vegan and he was heating up some veggie dogs or whatever.
I asked him, "are those vegan dogs or something?"
To which he snootily replied, "yes they are, I grilled them on my new grill. Got a nice char on them."
Offended, I offered my rebuttal, "there's only one thing wrong with those."
His curiosity raised, "what's that?"
I then told him, "there's no meat in it. Nothing's right about that."
Offensively, he struck back, "it's good to me."
What an asshole. And then TODAY, guess WHAT, he was at it again with those hot dogs. He said hello to me and reassured me that yes, they were vegan before I could ask.
"That's just wrong, having no meat."
"It's fine" that uppity vegan asshole responded.
I pressed further to defend myself, "no meat, it's wrong"
And then the asshole vegan LAUGHED at me and said again, "it's fine to me." While shaking his head.
Vegans are elitist dickheads!!!! I just want the guy to accept that his beliefs are wrong, what's his fucking problem?
(Thank you for reading my meta-rant in which I'm actually the vegan in this scenario (hello!) and the meat eating defender is clearly defending himself from my meatless sacrilege. I started laughing at the end of our exchange because time and time again, I have learned even if you're NOT an asshole about veganism, some people get so defensive. Some people try to dismantle your beliefs and you could be just minding your own business. It's nuts. Btw, your food is BAD AND WRONG lol jerks, am I right? That was sarcasm, no one's food is bad and wrong.)

(10,345 posts)But that's my point, yes people are so damn fussy about food even if you don't bring it up.

(23,572 posts)to see ads EVERYWHERE about meat. Even if you don't have a tv it's everywhere happy cows happy pigs please torture and eat me.
But, we say a word about ethics and we are seen as aggressively attacking them and forcing our opinions on them.
Sorry had to rant. You know.

(115,869 posts)Be a vegetarian or a vegan. Or not. Yes, some vegans can be annoyingly evangelical about their food choices. And some carnivores are annoyingly defensive about theirs. I don't bug other people about what they eat (except for onions; I hate them and can't figure out why people regard them as food and insist on putting them in damn near everything) and I don't want other people bugging me about what I eat. It's another thing, like sex, where people need to mind their own business.

(11,879 posts)and my family still sees my food choices as a judgment on them. I never proselytize or sermonize or even discuss the food I choose with them... yet there it is.
Oh... and guess what their political bent is. We won't even go into that.

(2,533 posts)people from both sides do it actually.
Sometimes it's very rude. Like when my vegetarian daughter had been dating this guy for a while and she had to go to dinner with his family. She hadn't said a word about where they were going or anything & his father looked at her and said loudly " Were going to a steak house and if you don't like it that's too bad!" RUDE and uncalled for..
on the other hand I was on an online forum one day and posted my family recipe for tuna salad and a vegan woman responded to me by saying " So, you like to kill endangered animals! You're a selfish pig. You don't care how many have to die to fill your pie hole do you?!" Yes.. that's what she said. That was her approach to me on a first time discussion , so that was pretty much her introduction to me.
Rudeness occurs from both sides of the fence.
I'm sorry about your work problem.
When my vegetarian daughter visits I and my other daughters go out and buy lots of foods just for her and I make special meals with no meat in them because I want her visit to be pleasant .

(10,345 posts)There really are elitist vegans, that's where the stereotype comes from after all.
I just wanted to make the point that you don't have to be a talkative vegan to get an odd treatment.

(10,109 posts)I'm not vegan, but went out to lunch with my idiot coworker one day. We went to Noodles and I didn't get the meat added to whatever I ordered. She got all worked up, where's the meat? Where's the meat? Squawking like a parrot, still cracks me up when I think about it.
Peace

(54,445 posts)But I have no problem whatsoever with anyone who is. People who feel the necessity to bother others over something like that must have some kind of pitifully empty lives.

(38,328 posts)... but I grew up in a family where there was always fish, farm animals, and game in the freezer.
My ancestors were ranchers and dairy people. My mom's cousin is a rancher. My dad loves to fish. I've got siblings and nieces who keep chickens and meat and dairy goats.
For me it always comes down to our dogs. All of them difficult animal shelter dogs. They are here on this earth, they are sentient beings, and I don't expect them to be vegan or vegetarian against their nature. I buy their meaty food at Costco.
My own personal goal is to minimize my footprints on our earth's natural environment. If I'm not eating meat most days I'm doing that.
If someone in my family is serving fish they caught, goat milk cheese, or eggs from their chickens, I'll eat it. Heck, I'll eat gamy sausage.
I inherited my great aunt's sausage making tools, but I've never used them. Don't tell our pig hunting dogs...

(10,345 posts)My dogs eat meat, my cats eat meat. That's their diet.
Luckily as an omnivorous human I have a choice. But they don't really. I won't deny them that.

(21,646 posts)sure she would have added pork but there was a book and I am sure there are others that can be found online.
Recipe for any legumes (beans, peas, lentils, etc.) and many vegetables can be used for sausage stuffing. Just cook them, grind them up and season however you want. You will also need something to bind and moisten (eggs, butter, oil, wine, etc.) and a thickener like breadcrumbs, rolled oats, wheat germ, etc. this fills in for the animal meat. Do not like I did try cornmeal masa like a tamale in a vegetarian sausage casing (stick with corn husk for that)
It's copyrighted in 2003 so truly vegetarian casings weren't available then but they certainly are very accessible now!
Instead back then, being creative , the cookbook calls for using vegetables or vegetable parts for shaping vegetarian sausages, like cabbage or Swiss chard leaves, the outer portion of leeks, corn husks (like tamales) or even flat breads. Or veggie sausage balls . I have seen those at IKEA. But now casings are available and great to hold together
There are recipes for Wild Mushroom Sausage with Walnuts,
Italian Bulgur Wheat and Bean Sausage Rolls, Portobello Sausage, Apple Tofu Sausage Apple Cranberry etc. If you eat cheese even more tasty options
get out great aunties grinder and look online if you are looking to get some use out of it someday
For the Home Made Sausage...heres one online

(5,680 posts)What I can't reconcile in my mind is a non meat eater wanting to eat a product that looks every bit like meat.
Burgers, hot dogs, tofu "chicken" nuggets???????????????????????
It blows my mind. So, if you can help me out with your take, it would be appreciated!
