The DU Lounge
Related: Culture Forums, Support ForumsBy the end of the day, I wish I could get by without hearing someone say,
"At the end of the day."
Seems to be a very popular saying in this day when we are dealing with short attention spans and people feel like they have to wrap their ideas before the next commercial break.

(52,253 posts)why did this become popular?
at the end of the day, it means the same thing as "because", so why not just use that word?

Actually we've slowly removed the You Know. I guess that's a positive. When I was a sportswriter decades ago it was easy to jot down quotes because every sentence had so many natural lulls: "I was working on my blocking...you know...and I started thinking...you know...that I could use the same technique...you know...even if it was a pass...you know."
Sometimes I was tempted to actually write it that way. I'm sure an editor would have intervened.

Got two of my pet peeves into one sentence!
I also have a visceral reaction when people say trite expressions the wrong way, such as "for all intensive purposes," "it's a doggy dog world," and "without further adieu."
But hey, when all is said undone, I'm not waiting with baited breath. I could care less.
