Musicals of the 40s-70s leave me cold. I hate them.

Even "Singin' in the Rain," the only bright spot in that one was Jean Hagen, who played Lina LaMont so beautifully. When she's not on the screen, I go back to my book.

Singin' in the Rain -- great cast, all stand-outs. The set pieces with Gene Kelly are extraordinary. He did the Singin' in the Rain dance with a fever on the first take. And his dance with Cyd Charisse is incredible.

The Music Man -- Again, a stellar cast. There's something about this film that makes one smile. Robert Preston is the stand-out. Oh, and what's not to like about Shirley Jones? Buddy Hackett (the actor who talks like he has marbles in his mouth), Hermoine Gingold, Paul Ford, and a young Ron Howard add some spice. Ye Gods! This is a good flick. Ye Gods!

I'm not big on musicals, generally. I despise The Sound of Mucus and Judy Garland drives me crazy. Cannot stand her! So that eliminates a lot of musicals on my list.

But at least I have these two!

Some of that may have had to do with the Mia Farrow scandal, which as you know was just 4 years prior to this film (and thus fresh in everyone's memory).

Going back to the subject of musicals, another one I like from 1996 is Tom Hanks' That Thing You Do. I'm not big on musicals; but I do enjoy those that have some semblance of real life (i.e. without talking animals).

Lots of otherwise good musicals are burdened by one or two bad songs (songs like "Climb Every Mountain" and "You'll Never Walk Alone&quot . "Oklahoma" is burdened with that interminable dream ballet (a lot of 50s musicals had that problem). "Kiss Me Kate" and "Cabaret" are two others that are top notch, and then a particular favorite of mine is "How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying" (Robert Morse versions).

Hands-down my favorite musical of all time although "West Side Story", "Sound of Music", "The Wizard of Oz" and the Lesley-Ann Warren version of Rogers and Hammerstein's "Cinderella" rank high as well.

"By the Light of the Silvery Moon" with Doris Day and Gordon MacRae.

After that, I've enjoyed just about every musical I've seen.

I'd add "Call Me Madam", just because of Merman. And "Thoroughly Modern Millie", too fun and Carol Channing was raspberries!

I actually saw it performed live as a little kid - I have no idea where - all I remember was that I think it was in a huge tent and Van Johnson played Professor Harold Hill, still remember him marching up the aisles in his bright red uniform to the tune of "76 Trombones!" We had the album, so I know all the words.

a couple of the old Lerner and Lowe/Rodgers and Hammerstein productions. In the '70s Ingmar Bergman made a movie of Mozart's Magic Flute and it's terrific. It's in Swedish instead of the usual German so it sounds a bit weird. But it's a cool production. Mozart's singspiel operas, which have spoken instead of sung dialogue, are a lot like modern musical comedies except much better.
