Scared the hell out of me one afternoon. I left him on blankets on the living room floor and went to the kitchen to answer the phone. When I got back he was gone. I was at the point of complete panic when I found him wedged behind a chair against a wall. Pretty funny really.

I just assumed it was a natural progression in locomotion...

Never crawled. Banged himself up pretty good over a period of about three days perfecting his running skills.

He ran cross country in middle and high school, and is still running as an adult.

Years ago there was a debate about leashing little kids here on DU. I think those who rejected leashes as a violation of a child's autonomy haven't had experience with a 9 mos. old, one year old, and two year old who runs away.

By three years old they may have a little common sense, but not reliably.

I was still running away in middle school. I remember being taken out in the hallway by a teacher who was lecturing me about my immature behavior. I didn't like it so I just ran, jumped over the fence and was gone.

The frantic school called my mom and she told them not to worry, that I'd probably be home for dinner.

I had a largely feral childhood because my siblings were all like that, some worse than me, and there were more of us than my parents could reliably handle.

She wore out more pants that way! I used to buy the iron-on patches to fix them up since she hadn't outgrown them yet. It was a riot watching her go!

13. My sister rocked her butt cheeks back and forth instead of crawling to move.

She could go forward and backward that way. Rocking/lifting her ass muscles (left cheek/right cheek) with a slight swinging motion of her arms to go back and a slight digging in with her feet to go forward.

I was walking at 9 months but I did crawl some before that. At 10 months my mom found me at the top of the linen closet on the second floor of the house. I had climbed up the shelves of towels and sheets. I was laughing. She said she got scared when she saw me.

It was wild. Now she's 6 and a dancer in two groups this year. She's got places to go and moves to be made.
