(5,614 posts)A movie that really didn't have to be made. The TV series was pretty good in its way but the most memorable part was the theme music. Otherwize just another white vigalante show. The movie role could have been played by anybody from Bruce Willis to Arnold. Glad the money went into Denzel's pocket.
Much better movie was the one where he was an ATF agent who had to go back in time to save the girl and stop a terrorist planning to blow up a ferry loaded with soldiers and their families. Tight storyline and good performances across the board.

(5,914 posts)He wasn't your typical "white vigilante". He was an older, bespectacled guy with the vocabulary and diction of a Shakespearean actor, not some cheerfully violent, armed-to-the-teeth beefcake. It was interesting watching his exploits, because it didn't look like he could pull some of them off.
I was a big fan of the original show and have no reason whatsoever to see this remake. Why do they keep remaking GOOD things from the 80s and 90s instead of trying to improve things that were imperfect but showed promise?

(66,467 posts)A lot of his BBC friends chided him about appearing in a hack American TV show ("It's for the money, right, mate?), and he had some choice words to rebuke them with.
He suffered a heart attack during the run of the show, and received scads of fan mail wishing him a speedy recovery. He reportedly answered every single one of some 700-odd letters personally.
That's a stand-up guy...
