Dying dog with terminal cancer finds home

Jake is a mixed breed pup with terminal cancer, a serious skin condition, and bad teeth.

The sign on his cage at the Front Street Animal Shelter in Sacramento California read as follows: “Hi, I am Jake and I have been around here for awhile now!'” "I am 12 years old. I am small and I hope someone will adopt me into their lovely family soon. I am a mellow guy and I would love your company."

In walks Melanie Andrews of Galt California. Melanie had just lost her husband in January and the family dog Lola in February.

Melanie walks up to a Shelter employee and asks to see their longest resident, the one that nobody seems to want to adopt.

The shelter worker takes her over to Jake.

"You could see he was a fighter and wanted to go to a home, something he missed,” Andrews said.

Melanie fills out the paperwork and within moments, She and Jake are family.

Melanie is my hero. Even though she knows she will have very little time with jake, this selfless grieving woman, rescues this sick, elderly pup, from his lonely existence in a cage at an animal shelter, and takes him to her loving home to live out his last days in comfort and with love.

What an extraordinary, loving, and kind human being.

I am still in tears as I write this. A feel good story at a time when things feel so bad.

I can't imagine them spending their last moments without someone to love them.

So sorry for your losses. We had two little sister litter mates that we adopted years ago, and they both had dwarfism, bad bones and bad teeth.

Their names were Hana and IPod.

They were beautiful little girls.

One day IPod got a cough and started having breathing problems, I took her to the vet and she said it was just a matter of time. She died a few weeks later.

Hana walked around lost for days and I took her everywhere with me. When she was walking around the house, she was always looking up in the air. Not straight ahead or around like she was looking for IPod, but up toward the ceiling.....it was strange.

Two weeks after her sisters death, at around midnight, Hana died.....just like that, I went to move her over on the bed, and I knew she was gone. I cried so hard....I was inconsolable. We wrapped her in a blanket and we slept with her till morning.

I still shed tears over those beautiful little MinPins.

I'm going to the local shelter and taking home a cat and a dog, there's room for both in my house and heart, too bad I can't take more.

They all need homes, and they're waiting.

We now have two wonderful Chihuahuas. One little guy Markie and one nasty little boy redhead, Lucky. Going in seven years now. I'm glad to hear that you will continue to adopt. After my MinPins died, I said to my spouse, that I wanted no more animals. That was grief talking. I will do the same as you when these guys go in 10 more years I hope.

I go for little dogs but prefer terriers, and I think I'll get two cats, they will most likely all be kittens and a puppy as they can grow up together and love each other.

Unless the dog was raised with cats then I won't go for a puppy.

Kittymonster doesn't care for dogs, I brought home "Winslow" a 10 yo Yorkie ( my favorite) and she attacked him instantly, they ended up getting along but he would sit in my lap and she would jump up and park herself on top of him to show him who was boss.

So I have to wait until she's gone, but I hope she has years left, and I'm sure she does, she's a 15 yo kitten, no indication of her slowing down anytime soon.

Critters are Family here, not pets.

Bless his little heart!

Front Street Animal Shelter sounds like a "no-kill" shelter and they should be commended for keeping Jake around until he found a home.

Kudos also to Melanie for adopting Jake.

My husband had been wanting us to get a kitty ever since our last kitty boy, Simba, went to the Rainbow Bridge in 2012. I finally gave in and started
looking on-line for an older pair of kitties to adopt (didn't want kittens since most rescue groups want you to make a 20 year commitment and we are
74 and 66). Found 9 year old brothers Elmo and Stitch at the Wake County Animal Center. Went down and brought them home right after Father's Day (so my hubby got kitties as his Father's Day present this year). It didn't take them long to adapt to our 11 year old rescue dog, Snowy--and she to them-- and become part of the family.

I don't know what I'd do these days without the fun, joy, and entertainment that our fur babies provide.
