One of the greatest rock guitarist/singer-songwriters ever, in my opinion.
(He died way too young)

You probably already know about how Tom Petty became a member of Traveling Wilburys, but some folks might not; so here, in a nutshell, is the story.
(From Wikipedia)
"Starting with a meal shared by George Harrison, Jeff Lynne, and Roy Orbison, the group came together at Bob Dylan's home studio in Malibu, CA to record an additional track as a B-side of Harrison's "This is Love"
Tom Petty's involvement came by chance, as Harrison left his guitar at Tom Petty's house, and the invitation for Petty to join the session was made when Harrison went to retrieve it.
They enjoyed working together so much that they decided to create a full album together.
'Traveling Wilburys Vol. 1'.
Written by all five men, it was recorded over a 10-day period in May, 1988, and released on October 18.
The album was recorded in the house and garden of Eurythmics member Dave Stewart."
Roy Orbison died of a heart attack on December 6, less than 2 months after Vol.1 was released.

A One Story Town
I'm for standin' up, I'm for breakin' free
I don't want fate handed down to me
Yeah I'm for movin' on, try another town
Time ain't changin' nothin', take a look around
Oh, I'm lost in a one story town
Where everything's close to the ground
Yeah the same shit goes down
Nothing turns around
It's a one story town...

The very cool Post-apocalypse theme of the video for You Got Lucky made me a Tom Petty fan.

Tom Petty | Into the Great Wide Open | 1991
This knockout track from Into the Great Wide Open might be one of Petty's best "album tracks" ever, and it's actually hard to believe it wasn't released as a single. Of course, when you consider that the album also featured the title track and "Learning to Fly," it starts to make sense. "Oh, I await the day good fortune comes our way, and we ride down the Kings Highway."
Lyrics
When the time gets right
I'm gonna pick you up
And take you far away from trouble my love
Under big ol' sky
Out in the field of green
There's gotta be something left for us to believe
Oh, I await the day
Good fortune comes our way
And we ride down the Kings Highway
No you can't hide out
In a six gun town
We want to hold our heads up, but we gotta stay down
I don't want to end up
In a room all alone
Don't want to end up someone that I don't even know
Oh, I await the day
Good fortune comes our way
And we ride down the Kings Highway

(27,850 posts)DANCIN' ACROSS THE USA
Well the curtain falls too early, so they say
Some will go
Others just stay and stay
Buttercup days are through
You know I always like 'em
But I think it's time that we flew
We went dancin', dancin', dancin' across the USA
On the crazy king's highway
Too much passion
Too much play
We went dancin', dancin', dancin'
Across the USA

(9,512 posts)As far as his guitar playing: there are many guitarists who are more technically advanced that Tom Petty but none who's guitar parts fit and move the song as his do. Petty and Campbell are like Lennon and Harrison.

(33,643 posts)And a few of those aren't Heartbreakers songs ... Free Fallin, Running Down a Dream & I Won't Back Down are solo Petty, technically.
Of what's on teh list I picked Mary Jane ... but they're all friggin great songs ...
red dog 1
(27,850 posts)Not, "What's your favorite song written by Tom Petty?"
Also, don't forget that Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers did covers of other people's songs as well
mr_lebowski
(33,643 posts)You have 3 songs 'written by Tom Petty' ... which are not 'Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers' songs listed. They're solo Tom Petty.
The question that would best match the set of song options given would have been 'What's your favorite Tom Petty song, with or without The Heartbreakers'
Not a big deal, friend, just pointing it out cause I'm an annoying pedant when it comes to musical trivia

(18,837 posts)I like most of his music, but "Can't Stop The Sun" was a jaw-dropper...that sort of "I Want You, She's So Heavy" doomsday riff at the end, with Mike Campbell spewing wah-wahed psychedelia...
Runner-up would be the live version of "Crystal River," but it's Mudcrutch, not TP&THBs, so...
mr_lebowski
(33,643 posts)But this one really puts it on center-stage ... John would definitely appreciate it ... and I gotta admit, I've never heard this track ... is there a better recording of this performance of this song? The whole thing looks like a major/big budget production so I'd think there's a cleaner version out there somewhere ... perhaps of the whole show?

(33,643 posts)Waiting ... song after song ... for a single track that they actually knew ...
I like it when artists do that ... rewarding the hard-core fans that actually bought the records over the years, rather than just 'knowing the hits'. It's a real treat for that group of people. Kinda like when The Who did Quadrophenia a few years back (which I saw).
And there's a few bands I'd love to see doing a tour like that ... The Cure definitely jumps to mind, for myself. To see them play the setlist from the early 1990's 'Paris' live CD? Sheeeeit ... or maybe Smashing Pumpkins do an all-of 'Gish' and 'Siamese Dream' tour ... and of course REM doing that kinda thing would be a DREAM ... to see the 'Live at the Olympia' set in person I think I could die after ... even though that was late in their career, that was a serious long-time fan appreciation show ... at least we have the CD though.
Or hey ... if the Stones did a Beggars Banquet/Sticky Fingers/Exile on Main Street tour?
Miles Archer
(18,837 posts)I was reading something last night about Stevie Nicks recalling the last time she performed with Tom, which was "Stop Draggin' My Heart Around" at Hyde Park. She made an interesting observation about how he had the gift of writing songs that explored the many nuances of relationships while fronting a band that was basically a "gang"...
And if you've read anything about these guys, they were most certainly that.
The Olympic show was not a "Breakdown->Free Fallin'->American Girl" greatest hits set. I'm sure those shows were extremely satisfying for fans who attended them, but this was...as you very astutely put it...a fans set list. It's where Tom and the boys went deep and got mean and if it is still available on DVD, I would highly recommend getting a copy of it.
The Stones actually DID a relatively recent Sticky Fingers show in Los Angeles...the album in its entirety, with the running order of the songs changed.
It was very, very good...but the original album was Mick Taylor's moment in the sun, and Ron Wood is never going to be Mick Taylor. If you can get past that, you may find it worth a listen.
