They're DVD vending machines, found in the Lower 48 in or outside of the ubiquitous 7-Eleven convenience stores (depanneurs).

the two largest DVD-rental-kiosk operators, both take debit cards. You pay by the day.

Note though that they both run their business on a day beginning and ending at 9pm so if you rent something at 1pm on Friday and return it at 11PM on Saturday, you've paid for two days whereas if you'd returned it at 8:50pm, you'd have paid for one day.

they send the next one on your queue (or more each time, if you want to pay more)
We signed up to try Netflix, the streaming movie offerings only, which we watch on T.V. using our son's Wii. If you want to watch streaming movies on your T.V. instead of on your computer, you can also use a Roku box. (I just asked my son to make sure this info is correct.)
My husband likes to watch lots of kinds of stuff. I must be a movie snob because every time I browse Netflix's website for a movie I want to watch it says 'DVD only'. Pretty soon I'll probably sign up for DVDs, too, so I can catch up on the many movies we've missed at the theater.

Paid on my debit card. Used the streaming service which worked very well. I also highly recommend checking out your local library to see what they have to checkout. Not sure where you live but most libraries have, or have access to, pretty extensive media offerings these days and it's free.

if your library doesn't have the dvd then they can order it for you.

it might take awhile but i can order anything in illinois (from the library) free of charge. (i won't use the redbox--i figure those little things helped to put too many people out of work so f. them!)
